AICES Athletics Championships

The AICES Athletics Championships was held at Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre on Tuesday 5 September. There were many outstanding individual and team performances throughout the day, with TIGS finishing in 6th place on medal count from over 60 schools. Our NASSA association also finished in 2nd place overall.

Congratulations to the following students for breaking AICES records on the day:

Congratulations also goes to the 14&U Boys Relay team of Zachariah Rusin, Arlo Steffen, Luke Hughes and Henry Chen, who came second in their race, beating their time at NASSA, also qualifying to compete at CIS next week.

 

ACT Schools Mountain Biking Championships

On Friday 1 September, nine TIGS students travelled to Canberra to participate in the 21st ACT Schools Mountain Bike Championships at Stromlo Forest Park. With an impressive turnout of about 600 riders, over half of whom hailed from outside the ACT, the event aimed to promote the joy of biking through a team-based relay competition. The race featured a 4-hour relay format for teams of 3 or 4, categorized into Junior (Year 6-8), Senior (9-10), and College (11-12), with further divisions based on male, female, and mixed teams.

In the Senior Girls division, our formidable team consisting of Charlotte I’Ons, Annie Martin and Audrey Davis showcased exceptional skill and determination, clinching a well-deserved gold medal. In an intense race that saw neck-and-neck competition, the girls triumphed over Oxley College with an impressive lead of 8 minutes.

In the highly competitive Junior division, where a total of 73 teams fiercely vied for victory, our Year 8 Boys team, comprising of Michael Mitchell, Baden Balding, and Luke Hughes, exhibited commendable performances, securing a respectable 12th position.

Meanwhile, in the Year 6 and Year 7 Boys category, the team composed of Adam Otis, Jake Martin and James Rutty, displayed great spirit and sportsmanship, finishing in 37th place, a testament to their dedication and teamwork.

A big thank you goes to Mr Davis and Mrs I’Ons for taking the team down to Canberra, to allow them to have this opportunity.

State Futsal School’s Championships

Our U10 Boys and Girls recently embarked on an exciting journey to the State Futsal School’s Championships held at Windsor, and they’ve returned with incredible tales of determination, teamwork, and unforgettable matches.

Despite the early 5.30 am departure, our young athletes were brimming with enthusiasm and unwavering team spirit on boarding the bus. Their energy levels were off the charts, with a newly formed team song setting the tone for an eventful day ahead.

The tournament showcased not just fabulous football but also exemplary teamwork and unwavering effort. Both the Boys and Girls gave it their all and left it all on the Futsal court.

The Boys started strong in their pool games, securing victories against Nareena Hills Public School and Lawson Public School. They displayed remarkable resilience even in their narrow defeats to Amity College and Norwest College, ultimately earning them a commendable fourth place in their pool. Congratulations to our Boys for their excellent skills and teamwork, which have developed impressively over the year.

Our Girls had an equally inspiring journey. They navigated their pool games with strong play, securing two wins, a draw, and two closely contested matches. On qualifying for the finals series, they drew inspiration from the Matilda’s recent World Cup performance and showcased incredible energy, grit and a rock-solid defense.

The Girls faced St. Spyridon in the quarter-finals, where they displayed nerves of steel and determination. After a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time, they triumphed in a thrilling penalty shootout, emerging victorious with a 4-3 score. In the final, our Girls team displayed even greater determination against a skilled Moriah College team. The match was fiercely contested and ultimately decided in extra time by a well-struck golden goal, leaving us narrowly defeated at 0-1. Nevertheless, the Girls team journey and performances were nothing short of outstanding.

Congratulations to our Girls team for their incredible top-four finish in the state! Their result is a testament to their dedication, teamwork, skill and positional development. Finally, a big thank you goes to Mrs Dribbus and Mr Robinson for their outstanding coaching.

TIGS v Nowra Anglican College – Cricket

 

On Monday 11 September, the Year 7 to Year 9 Boys cricket team travelled to Shoalhaven Heads to play a trial game against Nowra Anglican College. The game was an opportunity for both teams to hone their skills as a team before commencing the Wiburd Shield competition next term. With modified rules to ensure everyone on the team had the opportunity to bat and bowl, all of the boys enjoyed the experience of playing cricket against an evenly matched school.

TIGS won the toss and chose to bowl. It turned out to be a good decision with Lachlan Rayner and Caeron Aubin both taking early wickets. Remy Rayment-Shield enjoyed his first ever full game of cricket, taking two wickets and also two excellent catches. NAC set TIGS a target of 140 runs, having been bowled out after 37 overs.

TIGS also lost some early wickets, but Beau Sergeant and Archie Phillips steadied the ship, putting on a 51-run partnership. Following a great innings from Felix Loomes, TIGS lost some more quick wickets and fell 13 runs short, bowled out with 7 overs remaining. Top performances included: Beau Sergeant (29 n.o. & 2/0 – 3 overs); Joe Sommerville (2/17 – 4 overs); Remy Rayment-Shield (2/26 – 4 overs); Felix Loomes (22).

World Junior Swimming Championships

 

Jaimie De Lutiis has achieved some remarkable results at the World Junior Swimming Championships, which were held in Israel last week:

• Gold in the Women’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay
• Gold in the Mixed 4x 100m Freestyle Relay
• Silver in the Women’s 4x200m Freestyle Relay
• Silver in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay
• Finalist in the 200m Individual Medley
