International Student Opportunities

The Illawarra Grammar School invites applications from international students who wish to study in Australia.
Illawarra Grammar is a place of rigorous academic learning within a joyous atmosphere, set in beautiful grounds.
Our international students are immersed in the culture and community of our School, enjoying an authentic Australian experience.

Located in Wollongong

Illawarra Grammar is situated in the beautiful coastal city of Wollongong, just over one hour south of the Sydney CBD and international airport.
Wollongong is the third largest city in New South Wales, and the tenth largest city in Australia. It is located in the Illawarra region, which has a population of over 300,000.
The area is known for its stunning beaches, beautiful escarpment and one of Australia’s finest universities, University of Wollongong.

Stay With a Local Family

Our international students are accommodated in carefully selected homestays within either an Illawarra Grammar family or a local family. These families are reputable and provide quality accommodation.
Our Homestay Coordinator is available to manage any problems that may arise, and guardianship can be provided for students under the age of 18.

English Requirements

English Language Requirements
International applicants, for whom English is a second language, must meet the School’s English language proficiency requirements.

Kindergarten to Year 3
There are no English language proficiency requirements for students wishing to enter The Illawarra Grammar School from Kindergarten to Year 3.

Year 4 – Year 10
Students wishing to enrol from Year 4 to Year 10 must meet the English language proficiency levels shown in this table through AEAS.

Those applicants for Years 4 to 6 who do not meet the English language proficiency prerequisite will be required to attend the School’s Targeted English Program. A fee will apply.

Targeted English Program

Our Targeted English Program supports upper primary students in Years 4 to 6 whose second language is English and whose proficiency falls below the required level. This program is tailored to meet the unique needs of students requiring focused English language development, ensuring they acquire the content, knowledge and skills necessary for appropriate academic progress.
The Targeted English Program is offered on a termly basis. The cost for the program is equivalent to a full term’s tuition fees, and needs to be paid prior to the commencement of the program.

How to Enrol as an
International Student

Submit an Application

This can be completed online. Please include:

  • A copy of the applicant’s two most recent school reports
  • A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or passport
  • A copy of English testing results*
  • A letter of recommendation from the Principal of the application’s present school
  • Copies of recent references

Interview

You will be invited for a Zoom or in-person interview with executive staff at our School. This is a chance for us to get to know you and for you to understand Illawarra Grammar better.

Offer of Enrolment

Successful applicants will be provided with an Offer of Enrolment. To accept the offer of a place, the following must be forwarded to the School:

  • Payment of fees as requested on the Offer of Enrolment
  • Signed Acceptance of Offer

Acceptance of Offer
An electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) will be issued on receipt of the above which should be used to support an application for a student visa.

Commencement Details
You will receive all the relevant details regarding your son or daughter’s commencement for a smooth transition.

*All students applying for a place in Years 4 to 10 at The Illawarra Grammar School who do not have English as their first language are required to sit an AEAS assessment test.
