Curiosity and Courage in the Junior School

May 7, 2021
Head of Junior School - Ms Geneva Clayton

Curiosity and an open mind are surely amongst the most powerful and important dispositions to nurture not only in our learners but in ourselves. When we are curious, rather than defensive, we begin to discover the more useful space beyond right and wrong  – and we grow.  But this kind of curiosity means we need to be prepared to be vulnerable, to be ready to loosen ourselves from our safe, comfortable ‘tribe’ and go into the unknown.  The curiosity of this kind requires courage – Education expert Kath Murdoch.

As we enter Term II, we are inspired by our own curiosity and that of our ‘tribe’ and excited about the learning that continues to take place together as we settle into a new term, a new Unit of Inquiry and new personalised pathways. The Junior School is filled with energy as we now return to many of the fun activities and special events that make our school life so meaningful and memorable.

We began with a Junior School Anzac Day assembly to acknowledge and express our gratitude to Australia’s service people. Our Junior School Captains led this special assembly which was attended by our entire Junior School community, including parents. This is the first time that we have been able to come together in this way for some time, a true blessing.

Mothers’ Day Celebrations are always an important part of community connections and it was lovely to have so many Mums, aunts and special visitors join us to celebrate the important women in our lives. Our Mothers’ Day breakfast was the perfect way to start the celebrations. It was lovely to be able to come together and catch up with friends and of course, celebrate our mums!  A special thank you to our incredible Junior School parent helpers who have dedicated much of their time to preparing for our Mothers’ Day stall, ensuring that our little people have the special gifts they have chosen ready to share with their mums on Mothers’ Day.

Congratulations to our Year 3 and Year 4 students who have performed in their Instrumental Music performances with confidence and skill. Thank you to those parents who were able to attend. The learning of an instrument is a unique experience and we are fortunate to have our dedicated Junior School music teachers, Mrs Claire Hollander, Mrs Liana Bonaccorso, Mrs Rowena Harris and our music tutors who provide our students with an exceptional music programme.

NAPLAN will take place shortly.  Information about the testing has been shared and further information can be found here.  Our Year 3 and Year 5 students are prepared and ready to engage with the assessment. Your support is important so please encourage your child to do their best.  Approaching the days relaxed and confident is what we are aiming for, and will be our approach during this period.

Thank you to the Kindergarten to Year 2 parents and families who were able to attend the Kindergarten to Year 2 Literacy and Numeracy Evening. We were thrilled that this was able to take place this year. We hope that you were able to take home many useful tips and ideas for home learning. Our doors are always open should you have any further questions. We are interested to find out from Year 3 to Year 6 parents whether a similar night, with a focus on learning in the primary years, would also be of interest.

NASSA Netball Championships

TIGS Netball Team travelled to the Netball Central at Homebush to compete in a round-robin NASSA carnival. The Girls combined brilliantly displaying fantastic teamwork, considerable personal growth and improved gameplay throughout the tournament placing 4th overall.

Congratulations to Beth Kent and Rhiannon Evans (Year 10) on their selection in the NASSA team. Beth scored many goals for the team as Goal Attack then showed great versatility and strong play in the possible verse probable match to be selected as a defensive player in the NASSA team. Rhiannon pursued the umpiring pathway; her performance was exemplary throughout the tournament behind the whistle and in assisting the team to understand the finer rule specifics between games. Both Beth and Rhiannon go onwards to represent NASSA at the NSWCIS Netball Gala day on Friday 7 May.

A special thanks to Ted Beedles for his support, fabulous driving in heavy Sydney traffic and umpiring throughout the day!

Congratulations to our South Coast Regional Futsal Champions!

Four TIGS Futsal Teams recently competed at the Regional Futsal Championships. All teams demonstrated teamwork, skill and growth throughout the day and subsequently qualified for the State Championships to be held in August at Windsor. The U10 boys and Senior teams were undefeated finalist winners, with the U12 girls winning on penalties.

Congratulations to all players on your outstanding play and achievement!

A huge thank you to Mrs Dribbus, Mr Robinson and Mr Tregonning for ensuring our students were well prepared for the competition.
