Outdoor Education

I am sure that many family members enjoyed watching the recent Commonwealth Games, especially given that Australia was so successful!

When talking (gloating?) to an English friend about our extraordinary medal tally, she replied, “Well that is no surprise. You have wonderful weather, stunning outdoor spaces and healthy lifestyles”. She was right, of course. We are much blessed in Australia to have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.

At Illawarra Grammar, we value the opportunity for students to enjoy, and benefit from, the outdoor environment. Not only is sport encouraged through our curricular and cocurricular programs and through the continual improvement in our outdoor facilities, but our outdoor education program is deliberate and sequential.

Each year group from Years 3 – 10 attends an annual camp. The location of these camps is intended to be beautiful and with the right degree of challenge.  As much as possible, we try to use a different location for each camp so that the students gain a broad perspective of our Australian landscape. For example, the recent Year 8 camp was held near the stunning Colo River. These students came away with increased resilience, enhanced teamwork skills, and a better understanding and appreciation of the Australian environment. Furthermore, the camp was good preparation for the Year 9 camp which, at our school, now serves as the Adventurous Journey for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Other opportunities for Outdoor Education at Illawarra Grammar include the optional Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards; the Nganambala and Vietnam trips for Year 11 and Year 10 students respectively are also opportunities to build on the outdoor education skills acquired as part of the Camp program.

I am sure that you join me in expressing our appreciation of the staff who willingly attend these camps so that we can provide these invaluable opportunities for our students.

Use of Student Photos

Recently, the eSafety Commissioner released advisory communication in relation to use of student photos by schools, due to the growing number of concerns related to AI misuse. As a result, we will be updating our photo policy and photography consent process to an opt-in process from the beginning of Term IV.

More information will be provided over the coming weeks about these changes, with the opportunity for parents and carers to update their preferences through the Consent2Go platform. If you have any immediate concerns, please email enrolments@tigs.nsw.edu.au for assistance.

Our Head of Junior School

Today, Friday 7 August, is Australia’s Primary Principals Day. In NSW, the role of a successful Head of Junior (Primary) School is hugely demanding and, at our School, involves overseeing the teaching and learning programs; helping to appoint staff; enrolling and then caring for students; answering parental questions; overseeing the school grounds and so much more. The role involves long hours, some sleepless nights and considerable responsibility.

I hope that you have an opportunity to thank our Head of Junior School, Mrs Jessica Ford, who has commenced with us this year. I want to acknowledge and publicly thank her for the outstanding work she is doing for the benefit of our young learners.

Mrs Jessica Ford
Head of Junior School

Last week, Kindergarten marked an exciting milestone: their first 100 days of school! It’s been a delight to watch their growth and development since the beginning of the year. We thank our Kindergarten and specialist teachers and support staff for their dedicated care and encouragement. A special thank you also to our families for your ongoing support and partnership.

This week, we welcomed families to our Parent Teacher Interviews. These meetings gave students the opportunity to reflect on their learning, share their progress and discuss their goals. Thank you for your involvement and support. The goals set during these conversations will guide students’ learning for the remainder of the year.

Senior School News

Mr Paul Vickers
Head of Senior School

As a school built on Christian foundations, our understanding of leadership is shaped by the example of Jesus Christ, who taught that “whoever would be great among you must be your servant” (Mark 10:43). We seek to grow students who demonstrate a heart for service, a commitment to learning, and a desire to use their gifts to support and encourage others.

Student leadership at Illawarra Grammar is more than a title. It is an opportunity to positively shape the experience of others and to strengthen the culture of our School, leaving a legacy through service, initiative and example.

Applications are now open for students in Years 10 and 11 to be considered for 2027 Student Leadership positions. We look forward to seeing many students embrace this opportunity and continue the strong tradition of student leadership at Illawarra Grammar as we seek to cultivate young people who lead with wisdom, compassion and justice.

The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Psalm 23:1-4

This week, my Year 5 Biblical Studies classes spent time unpacking the rich metaphors and images of Psalm 23. We explored how God, our Shepherd, provides what his people need: green pastures, quiet waters, ‘right paths’ and rest. Yet the psalm also reminds us that God is present not only in peaceful seasons, but in the more stretching ones too. I like to call Psalm 23 a “pocket psalm”: a psalm to keep close and pull out whenever we might need it. I will be pulling it out myself in the coming week as I pray for our Year 12 students during their Trial Examinations. My prayer is that God will provide everything they need for the task ahead – clarity, a settled spirit and recall – and that, even amid the pressure of exams, they will know the steadying presence of the Shepherd who walks with them.
