Crystal Growing Competition Winners

February 15, 2024

We are thrilled to share the outstanding success of our students in the 2023 NSW Royal Australian Chemical Institute’s Crystal Growing Competition. The end of last year saw numerous finalists and highly commended entries, but two remarkable achievements truly stand out.

Austin Miao, a distinguished Year 12 student from the Class of 2023, demonstrated his knowledge in the realm of crystal growth by securing the impressive 2nd place in the fiercely competitive Open Year 7-12 Category in NSW.

Yet, the triumphs did not stop there. We are delighted to announce that two exceptional Year 7 students of 2023, Bianca Ratajkoski and Chloe Fennell, soared to the pinnacle of success by clinching the 1st place in the Open Years 7-12 Category in NSW. This remarkable feat not only showcases their exceptional scientific acumen, but also serves as a testament to the nurturing environment that The Illawarra Grammar School provides for the holistic development of its students.

As we celebrate these achievements, it is important to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our students, as well as the guidance and support provided by our educators. A big thank you goes to Dr Gollan for guiding these students towards this great achievement.

The Crystal Growing Competition is a platform that challenges students to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical, hands-on experiments. The accomplishments of Austin, Bianca, and Chloe underscore the depth of talent and the quality of education imparted at our School. Well done to all involved!
