Scholarships
Illawarra Grammar offers academic, music and sport scholarships generally for students entering Year 7.
Academic Scholarship
Scholarship applications for Year 7 2028 will open on 12 October 2026 and close on 3 February 2027.
Year 7 2028 Academic Scholarship Exam and Presentation for Parents: Saturday 13 February 2027.
Year 7 2028 Scholarship Interviews: Saturday 20 March 2027.
Academic excellence is a core pillar at Illawarra Grammar. Every possible step is taken to ensure our classrooms are places of rigorous and engaging learning.
We encourage high-performing students entering Year 7 to apply for an academic scholarship and to take advantage of our extension learning programs, academic mentoring, and array of academic cocurricular opportunities.
There is a Scholarship Application Fee of $145. Applications and academic testing are handled by an external provider, Academic Assessment Services (AAS).
Students from our Junior School are encouraged to apply, along with students from other schools. Scholarship applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
Academic scholarship applicants must sit for the scholarship examination which is used to identify and rank high-performing students.
The examination requires students to demonstrate a range of skills and abilities, but is not curriculum-based and does not test retention of knowledge.
While the scholarship is not conditional on ongoing academic performance, any scholarship holder is expected to display a conscientious approach to their studies. This includes excellent attendance.
Music Scholarship
Scholarship applications for Year 7 2028 will open on 12 October 2026 and close on 3 February 2027.
Year 7 2028 Music Scholarship Auditions: Friday 5 March 2027.
Year 7 2028 Scholarship Interviews: Saturday 20 March 2027.
We welcome students with a high level of music ability entering Year 7 to apply for a music scholarship.
There is a Scholarship Application Fee of $145.
Students from our Junior School are encouraged to apply, along with students from other schools. Scholarship applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
As a guide, students should be performing at the following levels:
- Strings: AMEB Grade 5 or equivalent (excluding double bass)
- Woodwind: AMEB Grade 3 or equivalent
- Brass: AMEB Grade 3 or equivalent
- Piano: AMEB Grade 6 or equivalent
- Percussion: AMEB Grade 3 or equivalent
- Guitars: AMEB Grade 5/Trinity Grade 5 or equivalent
- Voice: AMEB Grade 3 or equivalent
While the scholarship is not conditional on ongoing musical performance or achievement, any scholarship holder is expected to display a consistent conscientious approach to their studies. This includes excellent attendance. Generous involvement in the cocurricular music program is assumed.
Each applicant must submit an application form together with the following documents:
- A personal letter from the student which outlines their musical and other experiences, interests and goals including leadership achievements and community involvement
- A letter of reference from their instrumental or vocal teacher
- Two most recent school reports and NAPLAN report (if external applicant)
- Any medical specialist reports, if applicable (e.g. WISC, WIAT, AGAT, WPPSI).
- Most recent AMEB practical exam certificate and report (or equivalent)
- Most recent AMEB Theory of Music/Musicianship exam certificate (if attempted)
An audition will be granted to successful applicants and will consist of:
- A performance of two proficient and polished pieces. These pieces must be contrasting in style and must display a good standard of performance for the age of the student. In the case of multi-instrumentalists, the student may perform on their two most proficient instruments.
- Duration of each piece is strictly three minutes.
- Students should be prepared to undertake a sight-reading exercise at the audition.
- Accompaniment must be provided by the candidate. A piano and audio equipment will be provided. Audio (in the case of backing tracks) must be provided on either a CD or USB and be formatted as MP3 or WAV audio.
- A short interview with the panel to provide insight into the student’s artistic practice.
Sport Scholarship
Scholarship applications for Year 7 2028 should be made before 3 February 2027.
Applications for sports scholarships may be made at any time for entry into Year 7 to 10. However, for Year 7 2028, preference and priority are given to applications that are made before 3 February 2027.
Once your application has been received it will be reviewed by the scholarship committee and successful applicants will be invited to attend a scholarship interview.
The Illawarra Grammar School strongly encourages outstanding performance in sport and provides opportunities for students to represent the School at local, state, national and international levels.
There is a Scholarship Application Fee of $145.

As a guide, students who are applying for a sport scholarship are generally competing in their chosen sport at a state or national level (or the highest possible equivalent depending on the sport for candidates in Year 5 and 6).
Applications will be considered according to:
- The level of competition of the applicant
- Sporting achievements of the applicant
- Evidence of diligent and sustained effort at school
- The representative sporting needs of Illawarra Grammar.
While the scholarship is not conditional on ongoing sporting performance, any scholarship holder is expected to display a conscientious approach to their studies. This includes excellent attendance.
Each applicant must submit an application form together with the following documents:
- A personal letter from the student which outlines their sporting achievements, interests and goals including leadership achievements and community involvement
- A reference letter from a relevant coach, with contact details
- Two most recent school reports and NAPLAN report (if external applicant)
- Any medical specialist reports, if applicable (e.g. WISC, WIAT, AGAT, WPPSI).
- A portfolio of sporting achievements from the past two years, including:
- State and national results, if relevant
- Placements, awards and notable performances
- List of team involvement
This should include competitions outside of school at a representative level or above, as well as results within school pathways at a regional level or above e.g. NSW PSSA, NSW CCC, CASA, CSSA.
For Dance: please include international competitions, dance company involvement and/or scholarships to attend intensive programs.
The Rev Richard Bosanquet Scholarship
Scholarship applications for Year 10 2028 will open on 12 October 2026 and close on 3 February 2027.
Once your application has been received it will be reviewed by the scholarship committee and successful applicants will be invited to attend a scholarship interview.
Rev Bosanquet was the Founding Headmaster of Illawarra Grammar. This scholarship, funded by the TIGS Foundation, is available each year to a student entering Year 10, either from within or outside the School.
Scholarship applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of Australia.
Each applicant must submit an application form together with the following documents:
- A personal letter from the student which outlines achievements, interests and goals including community involvement
- Two most recent school reports and NAPLAN report (if external applicant)
- Any medical specialist reports, if applicable (e.g. WISC, WIAT, AGAT, WPPSI).
