The HSC Works
One of the joys of Term III is seeing the HSC major works of our Year 12 students. At Illawarra Grammar, our display took place last Thursday evening.
Over the years, I have attended many such evenings, and I think it is true to say that I have never attended a more wonderful HSC Major Works Evening. All the works – from the Society and Culture projects to the timber works, from the music repertoire to the art work – were outstanding. Many staff members and their respective departments were involved in the projects, and I know that the students are very grateful for the expert assistance of their teachers. The marking of these works by the HSC examiners is taking place over the next few weeks.
Respectful Behaviour
I know that the need for more respectful behaviour in our community has been a feature of the NSW media over the past week or so. Consequently, I thought I would inform parents of the measures that we take at the School to teach, and enforce, respectful behaviour at school.
Respectful Behaviour is a topic that is addressed in our curriculum across the primary and secondary years. Age-appropriate behaviours and topics are discussed, ranging from the importance of good manners for our youngest students right through to consent for our older students.
Importantly, these lessons are often reinforced with guest speakers or additional resources. For example, Year 9 recently held a day-long and well-received workshop addressing the issue of Respectful Relationships with the assistance of two widely-regarded presenters. Similarly, I spoke in Assembly this week to the Senior School about the influence of friends, highlighting the impact that they can have on one’s choice of appropriate and respectful behaviour. This is an important (and timely) topic as any behaviour that denegrades women, or any members of our school community, is unacceptable at this school.
Educators know that the most powerful behaviours are the ones that are modelled. For this reason, at Illawarra Grammar we:
– Insist on high standards of behaviour
– Practise taking turns
– Refer to adults by their full names
– Employ capable women into senior roles
– Encourage a culturally-diverse community
– Personalise and value individual academic pathways
amongst many other equally-powerful strategies.
Of course, the teaching of respectful relationships at school is much more effective if reinforced at home. My sincere thanks to the parents who ensure that sisters are treated equally, that women are respected, that strong filters are placed on home devices to restrict pornographic images, and that language at home is devoid of innuendo or slur.
Together, we can produce upright and respectful citizens.
The Use of Student Images
Thank you to the parents who attended the recent P&F meeting and who contributed to the discussion about the use of student images.
From 2027, the School will be using an active, yearly opt-in system for the use of student images in external publications such as marketing and social media. Thank you to the parents who acknowledged the increase in the workload that an opt-in approach entails; nonetheless, we think that this is an important precaution for the School to adopt. Internal publications such as the Year Book will maintain its current opt-out approach.
This opt-in permission change was previously communicated in a newsletter as taking place in Term IV. It will now be implemented in Term I 2027. If you have any concerns in the meantime or would like to update your child’s photo permissions, please email enrolments@tigs.nsw.edu.au for assistance.
Mrs Deacon, our Director of Marketing, and I are also looking at other strategies to help ensure the safety of our students. I will keep parents informed of these strategies as they are finalised.
Father’s Day
Thank you to the P&F for organising special Father’s Day events across the School this week, and thank you to all the fathers and children who supported these events. I wish all fathers and father-figures a Happy Father’s Day for Sunday.

For several years, The Illawarra Grammar School has invited our graduating Year 12 students and their parents to participate in an annual Exit Survey. This survey provides an important opportunity to reflect on your family’s experience at the School and to share feedback about the many aspects of school life that have contributed to your child’s education and development.
While we hope that much of the feedback will highlight positive experiences, we also welcome constructive suggestions about areas where we can improve. The insights gathered through this survey are valuable in helping us evaluate our programs, practices, and the overall educational experience we provide.
Survey results are reported in the School’s Annual Report, which is published on our website each year. More importantly, the feedback helps inform future planning and decision-making. We take all responses seriously and carefully consider recurring themes and suggestions as we seek to continually improve our offerings.
Year 12 students will complete the survey during their Year Meeting next week. Parents are invited to complete the survey now via the link below. It should only take 5-10 minutes, The survey will remain open for two weeks, and I encourage you to take the opportunity to share your thoughts and experiences.
Illawarra Grammar School Survey 2026
Next term, similar surveys will be conducted with students in Years 6 and 9, along with parents of students in Kindergarten, Year 6, and Year 9. Further information and survey dates will be communicated through the newsletter next term.
Thank you for your time and for partnering with us in the ongoing development of our School.
Junior School News
Head of Junior School
One of the great strengths of a P-12 school is the opportunity to provide a connected educational journey for students. From their earliest years through to graduation, students benefit from shared values, strong relationships, and collaboration across the school.
Our transition programs begin well before students move to their next stage of learning. Mrs Allard and Mr Jorgensen-Hull have already spent time with our Prep and Pre-Prep students, getting to know them and building connections. Similarly, Mr Vickers and Dr Greenhalgh have been meeting with our Year 6 students, talking about Senior School life and helping them prepare for the transition to Year 7. Students have also participated in Senior School tours and will begin transition sessions with their class teachers.
One of the ways we are supporting this transition is through the appointment of our Mathematician in Residence, Ms Onisczenko. Since joining Illawarra Grammar last term, she has worked with Mr Jorgensen-Hull to review mathematics programs and assessments across the Junior and Senior Schools. Ms Onisczenko has also been working with Dr Carswell in our Year 5 and Year 6 Archimedes Mathematics Program and will continue working with these students next term while supporting Year 6 teachers as students prepare for Year 7 mathematics.
While preparations for Year 7 are underway, there is still plenty of learning ahead for our Year 6 students. With our Year 6 Showcase of Learning approaching and many exciting learning opportunities still to come, we look forward to a wonderful term and a half of learning, growth and celebration together.
It has been a big couple of weeks for our Parents and Friends Association. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped make this morning’s Father’s Day Breakfast and yesterday’s Father’s Day Stall such a success. We are incredibly grateful for the time, energy and enthusiasm that go into organising these special events for our students and families.
A special thank you also goes to the team who coordinated last week’s Book Fair for Book Week. We greatly appreciate the ongoing support of our Parents and Friends Committee and the many volunteers who help strengthen our school community.
This week, we were delighted to welcome Nathan Luff, whose passion for storytelling and illustration captivated our students and sparked their imaginations. His visit was a highlight, inspiring a love of books and reading in every classroom. Last Friday, the Junior School came alive with colour and excitement as students dressed up as their favourite book characters. It was a joyful celebration of literature and imagination!
We are deeply grateful to our community for their generous donations to the library and enthusiastic support. A special shout-out to our Library team, whose creativity and dedication brought the magic of stories to life and made this week such a memorable success.
Congratulations to Mrs Bonaccorso and our dedicated team of Junior School music teachers and tutors for a fabulous Junior School Music Showcase. The talent and enthusiasm displayed by our students were truly inspiring. We now look forward to next week’s Combined Dance Showcase, where our dancers will have the opportunity to shine and share their passion with our community.
With great excitement, we announced at Assembly that our 2027 School Production will be Moana Jnr! Students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will be invited to audition to take part in this wonderful production. Please see the information below for further details.
Over the past two weeks, 38 students from our School participated in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, a national competition that celebrates spelling excellence and vocabulary knowledge.
We are delighted to announce that the following students have progressed to the second round of State Finals: Kai Cross, Alice Miao, Alexander Huda, Yuxuan Ren, Miles Zhou, Arabella Kiki, Zoe Lines, Mikayla Zhou and Oscar Ju.
A special mention goes to our School Champion, Kai Cross, who achieved an outstanding 30th place in the state. We wish our finalists the very best as they compete in the State Finals this week.
Senior School News
Head of Senior School
Senior School students have recently voted on their student leaders for 2027.
Earlier in the term, more than 30% of Year 11 students applied for Prefect positions for 2027, while nearly 40% of Year 10 students nominated for the various Captain roles available in Year 11 next year. These numbers reflect a positive school culture. They demonstrate a student body that is invested in its community and passionate about school life.
This weekend, we celebrate Father’s Day and the important role fathers and positive male role models play in the lives of children and young people. Long before students apply for leadership positions, they learn about character, compassion and service from the adults who guide and encourage them each day.
In assembly this week, Head Prefect Robbie Lavelle quoted leadership author John Maxwell: “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” Our students first encounter these lessons at home. On Father’s Day, we give thanks for the many dads and male role models in our community who care deeply about their children and their education. Your encouragement, guidance and example help shape the young people we are privileged to teach.
Mr Adrian Deck
Head of Sport
More than eighty Illawarra Grammar students represented the School at the CASA Secondary Athletics Carnival, delivering an outstanding performance to finish second overall.

We wish these athletes all the very best as they prepare to compete. Thursday morning athletics training is still on for some extra training before the event.
The School is excited to be able to offer a range of cocurricular sports during Term IV. Any Senior School students who are interested are encouraged to sign up using the links below:
Year 12 students planning to apply for the UAC Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) must submit their application by 11.59 pm on Friday 11 September 2026.
SRS provides eligible students with an opportunity to receive an early university offer based on criteria beyond the ATAR, including Year 11 results and the school’s recommendation.
Students must first submit a UAC undergraduate application before they can complete their SRS application. Do not leave this until the final day. Applying early will give you time to check your details and resolve any issues before the deadline.

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.
Matthew 16:24-25
Last Thursday evening, The Works showcased the remarkable creativity of our Year 12 students as they prepare for the HSC. Across design, drama, woodwork, visual arts and music, there was not only skill, but conceptual depth and beauty. It left me reflecting on a question we explored in Senior Chapel: what makes a life beautiful? Beauty is more than what is polished or impressive. The deepest beauty can hold the weight of truth, deep brokenness and love. Jesus describes such a life in striking terms: “Whoever loses their life for me will find it” (Matthew 16:25). A beautiful life is not one protected from every cost, but one learning to give itself away in love, following the One who first gave himself for us.
