Three Compliance Updates:
Schools in NSW often have compliance requirements made of them by our education authorities. I thought I would explain three of the most recent requirements.
– Accreditation and Registration
Every five years, each independent school in NSW goes through a relatively rigorous inspection by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) into its governance, finances, teaching practices, policies and procedures to ensure that it is operating lawfully and effectively in its role of teaching students. Once satisfactorily “inspected”, a school can be registered as a school in NSW, and be accredited to teach the NSW syllabuses for another five years.
This year, Illawarra Grammar was inspected. This involved submitting a considerable amount of paperwork earlier in the year, and then hosting the two NESA inspectors at the School last week where they reviewed more documentation and spoke to relevant senior staff.
I am pleased to report that we received very positive feedback about our administrative, governance and teaching procedures and practices. In fact, the inspectors were overheard to say, “These children are in very good hands”. As a result, the School has been registered and accredited for another five years.
– Changes to HSC Assessment Practices
Last week, the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning, Prue Car, announced that she has asked the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) to examine measures to protect student learning and maintain the integrity of the Higher School Certificate in order to ensure the authenticity of student work.
Half of a student’s HSC result is based on school-based assessment, some of which can be completed outside the classroom, so ensuring assessment remains a genuine measure of student learning is important. Sadly, the possibility of cheating in take-home tasks, projects, musical compositions and even artwork in NSW education means that take-home tasks are no longer accurate representations of understanding of syllabus content. While various checkpoints, diary entries and portfolios can be introduced to try to minimise the cheating, AI is smarter than these strategies!
As an immediate step, Minister Car has asked NESA to consider a moratorium on unsupervised, take-home assessment tasks while a broader review is undertaken into AI’s impact on student learning and assessment although it is expected that some tasks, like major art or design and technology projects, would be exempt from such a ban. Subject to NESA’s advice, any interim changes would be implemented by the beginning of Term IV this year, providing the HSC Class of 2027, their schools, and parents with certainty as their final year of school begins.
Many schools, including Illawarra Grammar, have already identified this issue and put into place measures to ensure that HSC assessments are genuine.
Of course, the preparation for HSC assessments can include research, the preparation of study notes, collaboration, collecting information from a variety of sources, time management, the preparation of summaries, in-depth study, etc, and this is to be encouraged; our students are frequently submitting draft responses in order to refine their writing. All these strategies can lead to clearer understanding of concepts which is then presented in class, either in individual oral presentations or in writing.
I strongly support the Minister’s recommendation as I am very keen for our assessment results to be valid indications of understanding, rather than copied and pasted responses from AI, or from private tutors. While preparation for assessments can be varied and wide-ranging, I believe that a written task, or an individual oral task, done at school, is the fairest way to indicate understanding.
– National Framework for Addressing Bullying
Earlier this year, the federal and state Education Ministers agreed to the Implementation Plan for the Anti-Bullying Rapid Review which was conducted last year.
The Implementation Plan is designed to ensure that every Australian school is a safe, inclusive, and respectful learning environment. It focuses on national action while acknowledging that these actions will be complemented by jurisdictional and school level activities. It is intended to give teachers, parents, young people and children confidence that, no matter where a student goes to school, bullying and other harmful behaviours will be appropriately addressed and the school workforce supported to take appropriate action.
The Implementation Plan mandates the inclusion of the expectations of the National Framework for Addressing Bullying in Schools into the policies and procedures of all Australian schools by Term 1 2027, and for schools to make these policies publicly available.
I am pleased to assure parents that bullying has always been unacceptable at Illawarra Grammar. We take strong action against bullying, even to the point of removing students from the School. For this reason, we have already included the Framework’s expectations into our relevant policies, and these are available for reading on our website. The most relevant policy can be found here; the link to the Framework can be found here.
NAPLAN 2026
I am pleased to inform parents of the results of the 2026 NAPLAN testing of our students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. While students in NSW encountered some technological challenges on the first day of the literacy testing, the outstanding achievement of our students in all areas cannot be denied. Please find a summary here.

Head of Junior School
What a joy it was to open the Hoskins Handball Courts last week. Our Year 6 students have thoroughly enjoyed this new space, which has quickly become a hub of competitive handball, great conversations and students connecting with each other.
A big thank you to the P&F and the wider Junior School community for your generosity through the Walkathon. We are incredibly grateful for your support in making these handball courts possible and for your ongoing commitment to our students.
Our Year 6 students have also been busy preparing for their upcoming Showcase of Learning which will be on Thursday 17 September. We look forward to welcoming Year 6 families and hosting a twilight afternoon tea after their showcase in the Hoskins Courtyard as an opportunity to thank the P&F for their continued support of our Junior School community.
Science Week was a fantastic celebration of curiosity and discovery across the Junior School. A special thank you to Dr Carswell and Mr Wilson for their planning for the week. From exciting science demonstrations and miniature garden planting to pollinator investigations and GRIT Games challenges, students embraced every opportunity to explore, create and learn. It was wonderful to see so much engagement and excitement for science across our Junior School.
It has been a busy week. As well as science week, we joined schools across Australia in recognising Bullying No Way Week, a national initiative that promotes kindness, inclusion and respectful relationships. Through classroom discussions and activities, students explored the important role they play in creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. Our Year 6 leaders visited classes across the Junior School and spoke about what it means to be a good friend and how to be an upstander. They shared practical ways students can support one another, show kindness and respect, and take action when they see someone being treated unfairly. Thank you to Mrs Allard and Mrs Young for their organisation and efforts.

The P&F, in conjunction with Collins Booksellers Thirroul, will be hosting their annual Book Sale during the Book Parade on Friday 28 August.
This is always a wonderful community event and we warmly welcome parents, carers and family members to join us on the Junior School Oval at 9.00am for the celebrations. Please note that there is no onsite parking available for this event.
A fantastic range of books will be available for purchase, with families invited to either:
- Donate a book to the Hoskins Library, helping to grow our collection for all students to enjoy, or
- Purchase books for their own reading enjoyment at home.
As an added benefit, a portion of all book sale proceeds will be donated back to the School to support the purchase of new resources for the Hoskins Library.
We are incredibly grateful for the ongoing support of our P&F Association and for our valued partnership with Collins Booksellers Thirroul, whose generosity and commitment help foster a love of reading and strengthen our library collection for all students.
We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating a shared love of reading within our School community.
We are excited to welcome Nathan Luff to the Junior School on Monday 31 August.
Families can now pre-order Nathan Luff’s books online via the Junior School OLLE page . Simply scan the QR code or follow the link to purchase a book in advance. Pre-ordered books will be available to be signed by Nathan during his visit, making this a wonderful opportunity for students to connect with a talented Australian author and take home a special keepsake.
In addition, a portion of all book sales will be donated back to the School and used to purchase new resources for the Hoskins Library, helping to enrich our collection and support a love of reading across the Junior School.
We encourage families to place their orders before the visit and look forward to an inspiring day with Nathan Luff.

Illawarra Primary Schools Netball Day
Another exciting opportunity was the recent Illawarra Primary Schools Netball Day, where fifty-one of our students participated. Five teams with students across Stage 2 and 3 entered and played competitively throughout the day.
The day provided an opportunity for competitive match play and highlighted the hard work our players and coaches have put into developing the skills and teamwork of our netball community at School. Thank you to all the parents and carers who supported us on the day, in particular Taylah Davies and Graeme Cross for their coaching and umpiring.
The Junior School Student Representative Council would like to invite students to take part in a Crazy Hat Day on Tuesday 1 September.
Students are encouraged to wear their craziest, most colourful hat and bring a gold coin donation. All funds raised will go towards supporting our Compassion sponsor child, Drin. Compassion’s Child Sponsorship Program supports children by connecting them with a local church, providing access to nutritious food and healthcare, as well as education and Christian teaching.
We encourage students to get creative and have fun while making a meaningful difference in the life of another child. Thank you for your ongoing generosity and support of this important cause.
Please ensure all of your child’s belongings are clearly labelled with their first and last name, including any second-hand uniform items. We currently have a growing collection of unlabelled uniforms, hats and swimming gear. While we do our best to return lost items, this is difficult without names. Any unclaimed, unlabelled items will be sent to the Second-Hand Uniform Shop after two weeks. A friendly reminder to also pack a labelled raincoat in your child’s school bag each day.

Year 11 students will sit their Preliminary Examinations during Weeks 7 and 8 this term.
These exams represent the culmination of Preliminary (Year 11) courses. Teachers use the results to determine final grades and provide useful feedback to students ahead of their commencement of HSC courses in Term IV.
Students have received examination timetables and are encouraged to discuss their study planners with Mentors. The Library remains open to Senior Students on Saturdays between 9.00am and 2.00pm and represents the ideal venue for devoting some focused time on the weekends to exam preparation. Tutors for Mathematics, Science and Social Sciences courses are on hand to assist students.
During the exams window, Monday 31 August to Friday 11 September, regular timetabled classes will not run for Year 11. Students are only expected on campus for their scheduled exams but are welcome to study in the Goodhew Library at other times.
We wish Year 11 students all the best for their exams.

GATEway8
Last week, Illawarra Grammar fielded several Years 7/8 and 9/10 teams in the GATEway8 competition held at Macarthur Anglican College.
GATEway8 is an academically-focused challenge that encourages students to think critically, solve complex problems, and apply their learning in meaningful and innovative ways. In teams, students face challenges across key curriculum areas including English, Maths, Humanities and Performing Arts. The competition provides a platform for academic enrichment by extending learning beyond the classroom, fostering intellectual curiosity, building confidence and inspiring students to pursue excellence in their chosen areas of interest.
The Illawarra Grammar teams have been preparing for the competition this term and received placings across a number of categories on the day.
Science and Engineering Challenge
Over thirty Year 9 and 10 students recently took part in the Science and Engineering Challenge at Wollongong University where schools from across the region undertook a range of STEM activities.
Working collaboratively, students tackled hands-on challenges including bridge building, wind turbine design, eco-habitat construction, communications tasks, and complex problem-solving activities that tested their creativity, teamwork, and engineering skills. The event provided a competitive environment in which students were required to apply their scientific knowledge in real-world contexts.
We are incredibly proud of our team’s efforts and achievements especially being declared the winning school. We are now looking forward to the upcoming State Finals in Newcastle, where we will compete against some other strong teams from across New South Wales.

This week, Podium Program students had the privilege of hearing from alumna Emma McKeon (Class of 2012) during a special Q&A session held in our new Hoskins Lecture Theatre. As Australia’s most successful Olympian and the eighth-most decorated Olympian of all time, Emma inspired students by sharing her experiences, achievements and reflections from an extraordinary career in elite sport. Through her honest and engaging responses, Emma provided valuable insights into the dedication, resilience, mindset and work ethic required to succeed at the highest level. Her reflections on both the challenges and rewards of elite competition offered students a unique perspective on high-performance sport and served as a source of inspiration for our young athletes as they pursue their own sporting goals.
An album of photos from the event is available on OLLE.
