A Wonderful Few Weeks
While every week has its moments of delight and achievement, we are currently in a period of great excitement at the School. Not only have students taken part in the inaugural FISH camp and had much success at sport tournaments and the annual da Vinci Decathlon, our Year 12 students have also raised an incredible amount of money for their charity, Little Wings. Thank you so much to the parents who attended the Trivia Night and contributed to the happy tone and financial success of the evening. Making a significant contribution to a charity is a legacy of all our Year 12 cohorts, and this Year 12 group has certainly done us all proud.
However, it is probably the happy anticipation of the move into the Hoskins Building that is creating the excited buzz in the air. Year 6 students will pack up their belongings on Tuesday morning and, with their school bags on their backs, walk proudly into their new domain. I hope they always remember the moment – we will certainly always remember them as the first Year 6 group to use the building. Our Senior School students will move into the building as they have their English lessons during next week.
The official Opening of the Hoskins Building takes place on Friday 15 May. RSVP here to attend. I am sure that parents will be delighted with this amazing new facility.
Uniform Update
Parents will remember the consultation that took place last year with regards to the uniform. The feedback from parents and students was insightful, and has formed the basis of a review of the uniform. More details of the review will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Suffice to say that our new supplier, Focus Uniforms, has been able to move much more quickly than anticipated. For this reason, we will pause the need for students to purchase a TIGS swimming costume until the decision about a new swimsuit is made.
The new Uniform Shop will be located on the Senior School campus, and will be open for business from the end of the July school holidays. Exact dates will be given in later newsletters.
Podium Program
As many of you know, Mr Matt Brown finished up at the School last week in order to accept a position much closer to his home. We will miss him but remain thankful for his work with our elite athletes. Until his successor is appointed, Mr Adrian Deck, Director of Sport, will be overseeing the program. Podium students should contact him with any sport-related issues.
Mother’s Day
Happy Mother’s Day to all our Illawarra Grammar Mothers.
Junior School News
Head of Junior School
As we settle into Term II, it has been a joy to witness the vibrant learning and activity unfolding across our Junior School. From Kindergarten’s exciting excursion to Shoalhaven Zoo connected to their Science Unit of Learning, to the rich language and cultural experiences enjoyed by students in Years 3-6 on their respective excursions, each opportunity has been intentionally designed to support meaningful learning and student engagement. Our students have also represented our School with pride through their participation in the CASA Touch Football Gala Day and the CASA Cross Country Carnival, where they achieved great success.
Alongside these broader experiences, our classrooms remain focused on high-quality, targeted teaching. Through explicit instruction, purposeful practice and responsive feedback, we continue to build strong foundations that nurture confidence, progress and a love of learning.
This term includes many special community events, and our Mother’s Day celebrations this week were a highlight. The Mother’s Day Stall and Breakfast provided a meaningful opportunity to honour the wonderful mothers and mother figures in our community. We extend our sincere thanks to the P&F, especially Vice President Mrs Chrissy Latis and her dedicated team, as well as all volunteers who supported the stall and breakfast. Your time and generosity brought great joy to our School community.
Each Friday afternoon, our K–2 and Years 3–6 students finish their week with Chapel in Rees Hall. This is a joyful time of Bible teaching, singing and prayer as we gather to worship God. One of the highlights of Chapel at The Illawarra Grammar School is the involvement of each class, as students take turns leading throughout the term.
Please keep an eye on OLLE to see when your child’s class is leading Chapel – parents and carers are warmly invited to attend. Please note that students are expected to remain at School until the conclusion of the day, even if a parent or carer attends Chapel.
Across the School, students are engaging in Social Skills and Child Protection programs delivered by their classroom teachers. These age-appropriate sessions are designed to build student awareness, resilience and essential life skills that support wellbeing and safety.
The Social Skills program focuses on helping students develop positive friendships, regulate emotions, manage conflict and build empathy and respect for others. The Child Protection component reinforces personal safety and protective behaviours, helping students understand how to recognise unsafe situations and seek support from trusted adults.
Together, these programs play an important role in creating a safe, supportive and respectful learning environment for all students.
To help maintain a safe and efficient carline for our community, we would like to remind all parents and carers to follow the guidelines below:
- Please remain in your vehicle while in the carline. Do not exit your car to collect your child as this disrupts traffic flow and compromises safety of students and staff.
- Parents of students in Years 3 and above must not enter the carpark before 3.10pm. Arriving early causes congestion and affects the safety and movement of younger students.
- On-site parking is extremely limited. There is no parking available on campus for events, so please plan ahead and make use of surrounding street parking.
- Lanes must remain clear at all times. Vehicles should never be parked in areas that block access or impede the movement of other cars.
Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting a safe and respectful environment for all members of our school community.
Carline Video
All parents and carers who volunteer with classroom activities, P&F Association events or school excursions must have a valid volunteer Working With Children Check (WWCC).
1. Apply online here or scan the below QR code
2. Visit a Service NSW Centre with your ID
3. Once completed, provide WWCC number, full name and date of birth to the School for verification.
For the safety of our students, no parent can volunteer until these steps have been completed.
We are excited to share the details regarding the Hoskins Library. From Week 5, the Hoskins Library will be open after School hours for students in Years 5 and 6 who wish to engage in quiet, independent study. This initiative is designed to support students as they develop positive study habits and become familiar with expectations for independent learning.
Students in Years 5 and 6 may use the Hoskins Library for homework and quiet study at the following times:
- Monday – Thursday: 3.10pm–4.30pm
- Friday: 3.10pm–4.00pm
As with all Junior School after‑hours activities, the following conditions apply:
- Students must be registered with PEAK prior to using this service
- Students must sign in, and a parent or carer must sign them out
- Students requiring supervision after 4.30pm will need to attend PEAK (please register via the PEAK link)
- Before School, the Hoskins Library will be open from 8.30am, Monday to Friday, for parents and carers wishing to borrow additional books for home reading
- Lunchtime Library Sessions – Students in Years 1–6 will have access to the Library during lunchtime on designated days. Further details will be communicated during Term II.
Senior School News
Head of Senior School
This year, our community is intentionally exploring the value of Grit. At its heart, grit is the capacity to persevere over time, especially when progress is slow, outcomes are uncertain, or the work feels demanding. It is less about isolated moments of effort and more about the steady choices we make day after day.Â
Across learning, cocurricular commitments, relationships and responsibilities, our students are regularly faced with moments that ask for endurance. Often the reward for doing the right thing is not immediate or visible. Yet it is through these repeated acts of effort, discipline and follow‑through that positive habits are formed. In assembly this week, we explored the ideas that enduring builds endurance, and doing the hard thing builds perseverance.Â
Over time, these habits shape character and work ethic. The deeper reward of grit is not simply achievement, but the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can persist through challenge and act with integrity when it matters.Â
At Illawarra Grammar, we are committed to nurturing this kind of growth. By holding clear expectations, offering support, and valuing effort alongside outcome, we are proud to partner with families in forming capable, resilient and grounded young people who are prepared to lead and serve through their lives.Â
Our Pastoral Care team and Mentor Program under the leadership of Mrs Naomi Sullivan, Head of Academic and Pastoral Care, are integral to achieving these ends. Please read more below about how parents can best partner with this team.Â
A common question from parents is who to contact regarding student wellbeing and pastoral care matters. Clear communication pathways help ensure that information reaches the appropriate staff member and that timely, effective support can be provided.Â
For minor, day‑to‑day matters, parents are encouraged to write a note in the Student Diary addressed to their child’s Mentor Teacher. Mentor Teachers meet with students daily in their Mentor Groups and are well placed to receive, acknowledge and respond to these concerns.Â
For more significant or ongoing matters, the Year Group Dean is the most appropriate point of contact. This enables Deans to maintain a clear and comprehensive overview of students within their Year Group and to coordinate care and support as needed. The Dean will communicate relevant information to classroom teachers where appropriate.Â
In the event that a Year Group Dean is unavailable, parents may also contact the Dean of Wellbeing, Mrs Cassidy. Mrs Cassidy has a strong presence across the Senior School campus and works closely with students in Years 7–12. She is highly approachable and brings extensive experience in pastoral care and student wellbeing.Â
da Vinci DecathlonÂ
The regional heats of the da Vinci Decathalon, co-hosted by Illawarra Grammar, were recently held at Figtree Anglican Church over three days. This a major event on the cocurricular calendar with schools from as far away as Nowra, the Southern Highlands and southern Sydney joining the regional competition. The Decathlon is comprised of ten separate components: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy (general knowledge) and requires the eight students in each team to both work together and play to their individual strengths. Â
This is a challenging day for students necessitating innovation, careful consideration, clear communication, application of skills and time management. Each of our four Senior School teams in Years 7 to 10 placed in the top three for two or more of the decathlon categories, highlighting team abilities across diverse fields. Three of our teams, 7, 8 and 9, will travel to Knox Grammar in Sydney in the coming weeks to compete against schools from around NSW in the state finals.Â
Â
Brain Bee ChallengeÂ
Nine Year 10 students recently competed in the Australian Brain Bee Challenge run by the Australian Neuroscience Society. Students prepare for the competition in their own time, learning about the brain and neuroscience. This is a challenging and demanding competition. Four students have successfully progressed to Round 2, which is contested between 60 students across the state.Â
Â
Duke of EdinburghÂ
It was wonderful to see so many students and parents at our recent Bronze Duke of Edinburgh information evening. Information distributed during the evening can be found on the OLLE Cocurricular Page.
The requirements to complete the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s award have been modified for students who have already started this level or who are to about to embark on this level. This means that the time commitment required to complete the Skills, Physical Recreation and Voluntary Service components of the award are now very achievable.  When combined with the requirement for only a single Adventurous Journey, which will be automatically completed when students attend Year 9 camp, the Bronze award is more achievable than ever. We are encouraging all students in Year 9 to complete the Bronze level of this award.Â
To find more information on the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award program, students can visit their Year Group page on OLLE, visit the Cocurricular Programs page on OLLE or attend a Duke of Edinburgh Help session any Wednesday at lunch time in D18. These lunchtime sessions are designed for Mr Lichi and students working towards their Gold Award workshop questions and help navigate the Online Record Book and its requirements.Â
A reminder about upcoming dates for the Duke of Edinburgh Adventurous Journey component.Â

Choosing Your Uni National Virtual Expo: 10 – 17 May 2026
Our School is participating in the Choosing Your Uni National Virtual Expo, a free online event held during National Careers Week. Across the week, students and parents can explore live and on-demand sessions from Australian universities, government organisations, and real students, covering topics like career direction, pathways, funding, scholarships and student life.
The Expo is run by Choosing Your Uni, an independent platform that helps students figure out what to study and where. It’s not affiliated with any university — the guidance is unbiased and student-first.
Students can register here
Parents can register here
Make sure to use our unique code when registering:CYUEXPO2792
Not sure where to start?  Students can take the free ‘What to Study’ quiz at https://choosingyouruni.com/quiz to figure out which fields match their interests before the Expo.Â
Lunchtime SessionsÂ
We have also launched What’s Next? lunchtime careers sessions for Years 10, 11 and 12. The What’s Next? Lunchtime Sessions run in addition to our timetabled careers lessons, and further opportunity for students in the Senior Years to hear from universities, TAFE, Defence Force, professionals, trades and more.Â
Students are currently being surveyed to guide the ongoing planning of the sessions, ensuring that our careers provisions remain responsive to student needs.
On Thursday 21 May, our Year 8 students will be hosting a Biggest Morning Tea bake sale in support of the Cancer Council. During both recess and lunch, students will be selling a delicious range of baked goods on the Goodhew Lawn to the Senior School community.Â
This initiative is part of a wider effort to raise funds for cancer research, as well as vital support and prevention programs. Through this event, we are working towards our fundraising goal, and we are incredibly proud of our Year 8 students for their enthusiasm, generosity, and commitment to such a meaningful cause.Â
We encourage all students and staff to come along, enjoy a treat, and support the event by purchasing baked goods during recess or lunch. Parents and carers at home are also invited to support the cause by making an online donation here.
Every contribution, big or small, will make a difference. Thank you in advance for your support!Â
It’s been a big week of sport in the Senior School, with over 160 of our secondary students competing at the NSWCIS Swimming Championships, CIS Boys Football Cup, CIS Netball, AICES Football Bill Turner Cup Football, CASA Cross Country, Interschool Rugby and the Regional Basketball Championships.
A particular highlight from the week was the outstanding performances from our swimming team, with almost all of our relay teams and individual swimmers finishing in the Top 8 places in their events. Jack Gibson (Year 11) and London Campbell (Year 9) were standouts, with Jack winning three gold medals and London winning one silver and three bronze medals.
A reminder that Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in the Goodhew Library from 3.30pm – 7.00pm on the following dates:
- Year 11 – Tuesday 26 May
- Year 10 – Tuesday 2 June
- Year 7 – Tuesday 9 June
- Year 9 – Tuesday 16 June
- Year 8 – Tuesday 21 July
Year 11 interviews will be 10 minutes in duration, while parents/guardians of students in Years 7 – 10 will have the option of selecting either 5 minute or 10 minute appointments. Students are strongly encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians and are expected to wear full school uniform.
You will receive an email from school approximately two weeks prior to your relevant session/s with your unique login details. Once this has been received, you will be required to follow the following steps to login to the booking system:
- Log in to the TIGS Portal
- Click on the Booked Icon
- Click the Senior School Booked Icon
- Enter unique login details from the email
Please note that the system will be accessible from 5.00pm on the day the email is sent until 10.00am on the day of the Parent Teacher Interview evening.
You will be guided through the remaining steps after login. Please note the following points:
- Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples. If two parents/guardians wish to attend a single timeslot, one parent/guardian should make the booking, and both parents can attend that timeslot.
- Booked prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians. You will only see timeslots that are available.
- Please ensure that you confirm your bookings by clicking on the green plus ( + ) sign to the right of the time selection window.
- Once you have made your bookings, you can print the details.
- You can log in and change bookings any time up to 10am on the day of the interviews.
- If you see this symbol ( ! ) displayed alongside the class name, it means this teacher recommends that you book an interview.
- Other parents may be making bookings while you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a timeslot is displayed to you as available but is then booked by another parent. If you attempt to book this time slot, it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.
If you are unable to attend your evening/s or find suitable timeslots, please contact the School to arrange an alternative time to speak with your child’s teacher/s.
This term, students will receive their Half Yearly Reports which provide a valuable snapshot of their academic progress so far this year. These reports are designed to offer meaningful insights into each student’s current achievements, highlight areas presenting the greatest opportunities for growth, and reflect their broader contribution to the life of the School.
At Illawarra Grammar, we believe that reporting is not merely a record of past performance, but an important part of the learning process. Reports help students develop self-awareness and agency by identifying their strengths and areas for improvement. For families, they serve as a platform for meaningful conversations about learning, study habits, and personal goals. Importantly, they also enable teachers to continue shaping instruction and support based on each student’s evolving learning needs.
Please note that Half Yearly Reports will be accessible at 5.00pm on OLLE on the following dates:
- Year 11 – Friday 22 May
- Year 10 – Friday 29 May
- Year 7 – Friday 5 June
- Year 9 – Friday 12 June
- Year 8 – Monday 22 June
To access reports via OLLE, please follow the steps below:
- Log in to OLLE via the TIGS Portal under the Parent tab.
- In the My Students section, click the three dots next to your child’s name and select Academic Reports.
- Alternatively, click on your child’s name and then select the Academic Reports button.

These reports will frame the conversations at Parent Teacher Interviews. Should you have any further questions about your child’s progress after Parent Teacher Interviews, please do not hesitate to follow up with the relevant classroom teacher.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
Psalm 119:105
As the new Hoskins Building nears completion, it is worth pausing to ask what kind of legacy this space might help create. With the English Department and Junior School library at its heart, it will be a place shaped by words: reading, writing, questioning, imagining and interpreting. That is no small thing. Literacy is about far more than marks or exams. It helps young people attend carefully, think clearly, and read the world with wisdom. This sits naturally within our Christian foundations. The Anglican tradition has long valued the written and spoken word: Scripture read aloud, prayers shared in common, truth searched for carefully, and faith-seeking understanding. My prayer is that this building will help students become thoughtful readers, careful speakers, and people whose paths are lit by wisdom.
