Science and Engineering Challenge – State Runner-Up!

Aug 29 2025

Thirty-two talented students from Years 9 and 10 proudly represented The Illawarra Grammar School in the prestigious Science and Engineering Challenge, showcasing their STEM skills at both regional and state levels.

At the Regional Challenge held at the University of Wollongong, our students competed in eight hands-on STEM activities, including designing wind turbines, solving complex scheduling problems, building bridges, and creating eco-friendly homes. Our students excelled – taking out first place in the Eco-Habitat, Confounding Communications, and Wind Turbine challenges, and finishing a close second in Bridge Building. Their combined efforts earned the highest score across the two-day event, securing a place in the State Final.

The State Final took place at the University of Newcastle, where our students faced fierce competition from top schools across NSW. Rising to the challenge, our students won six out of eight activities, finishing the day with an impressive score of 1431.50. This remarkable performance placed The Illawarra Grammar School 2nd in the state, just forty points behind the top spot.

This achievement is a testament to the creativity, collaboration and problem-solving abilities of our students. Congratulations to all who participated.
