New Year, New Adventure

February 1, 2024
Ms Geneva Clayton - Head of Junior School

A new school year always welcomes a new adventure, fresh opportunities, new friendships to explore, goals to be set and an excitement that comes from transitioning to a new grade. Term I commenced with joy, laughter, plenty of smiles and shiny shoes. Our Junior School students happily bounced along the drive as they enthusiastically returned to school, excited to catch up with friends and for the learning that lies ahead. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your partnership in 2024.

A very special welcome to all our new families and students who join our School this year. Your children have been embraced wholeheartedly into The Illawarra Grammar School family and have enjoyed the careful transition to school and support from their class buddies. Kindergarten students have settled in seamlessly. As our year begins, I want to highlight the research that emphasises the important role that you play in your child’s School experience. You are their first and continuing educators. Building effective partnerships between home and School is a priority and our doors are always open.

The commencement of our School year saw the participation of students in Years 1 through to Year 6, in Watermelon Day, to mark the first day of school. This tradition began in 1959 when the milkman delivered a special treat of watermelon with the usual delivery of milk on the very first day of school. Every year, we mark this day with time together and the opportunity to enjoy a piece of watermelon.

We look forward to your continued contributions and opportunities to build connections with you. We encourage your involvement and attendance at the many Junior School events planned for the year. A special thank you to our grade parents who organise many important social events to connect our families to each other.
