Junior School Debating

August 4, 2023
Ms Priya Pather - Year 6 Teacher

On Thursday 3 August, our Junior Debating team won their preliminary round and is now entering the quarter finals. This achievement places them in the top eight out of 59 teams in the HICES debating competition.

This was their 5th debate and their topic was: “That Children Should be Legally Required to have a Bike Riding License.” They were the affirmative team.

“It was tough, and we had less time to prepare than normal. But we had fun debating against our opponents who we felt a connection with as we debated against them previously. Being in the debating team has hugely benefited our public speaking skills, as well as our confidence.” – Elise Cordaro

“I feel a lot more confident in our rebuttal skills. When we first started, we were not as good at improvising arguments on the spot. Now, after lots of practice and applying feedback from adjudicators, I am able to structure a response logically and convincingly.” Elias Ainbinder Satne

“Debating has been challenging, but a really good opportunity. We are excited to advance in the competition.” – Emily Clark

Congratulations to the team, they are looking forward to their next competition.
