Engagement and Community

March 13, 2020
Head of Senior School - Mr Nick Hackett

This week, we welcomed a significant number of visitors to TIGS as part of our Open Day events. During Tuesday morning, 11 groups – each comprising several families considering TIGS for their child’s education – embarked on guided tours of the length and breadth of the school site. I had the pleasure of leading two tours ably assisted by some wonderful students from Year 7 and Year 11. Over the course of the morning, we visited classrooms, took part in demonstrations, dropped in on rehearsals for this year’s School Production, and spoke with several students and teachers about learning at TIGS. As we walked the School, I began to wonder what a visitor to TIGS would take home at the end of their visit – what are the most striking things about life at TIGS? The conclusion I reached, and it’s one I’m happy to share with you, is that engagement and community are the common themes that run through every inch of TIGS life. Taking on the fresh perspective of our visitors, you can see it in the way students conduct themselves with maturity and purpose between lessons, in the way they interact with teachers and each other in classes across the school, and in the way they talk about their experiences at TIGS when posed with unscripted questions from visitors. At every opportunity, our students demonstrate that they are actively engaged with school life, that they are aware of their contribution to the warm and productive culture we enjoy at TIGS and that in so many ways, they are flourishing in a community that is built on Christian care.

I would like to thank everyone involved in the Open Day itself – both teachers and students, but particularly to those who do so much behind the scenes to make these, and other school events, so successful.
