Hoskins Update
I am pleased to be able to report that the demolition of the old H Block took place over the holidays. Now that the space is empty, it is easy to see the large footprint that the old building occupied. The new two-storey Hoskins Building will have a smaller footprint which means that we will be able to accommodate some new handball courts adjacent to the new Year 6 classrooms. Many of our Junior School students will be delighted by this news!
Strategic Plan
The School’s current Strategic Plan has been completed, and the senior staff and School Council have started to think about the next plan for our School. To this end, the Executive of the P and F met with me earlier this week to talk about the future direction of the School. I am very grateful to them for their considered ideas and suggestions.
All parents are encouraged to join in these consultations. I am keen to hear, first-hand, about the School’s features which parents value, and their thoughts about the best way forward for Illawarra Grammar.
Two more meetings are scheduled for next week – Monday 12 May and Wednesday 14 May, at 5.30 pm in the Library. In order to allow all participants to contribute, the groups size will be capped at fifteen people. More discussion times will be scheduled for the following weeks if needs be. If you would like to register for these consultation discussions, please do so by registering here.
Uniform Shop
As flagged in an earlier newsletter, Perm-A-Pleat is moving our Uniform Shop to a new shop front in Dapto. We have been told that this move is scheduled from 20 May 2025. Consequently, from that date forwards the Uniform Shop details are as follows:
Shop Trading Hours:
Tuesday: 8.00am – 12.30pm
Wednesday: 1.00pm – 5.30pm
Thursday: 10.00am – 6.00pm

Independent Schools in Australia
Some interesting statistical information about independent schools in Australia was recently released by Independent Schools Australia, and I thought I would share some of this data with you:
– There are 1,216 independent schools in Australia, 90% of which are co-educational
– Over 716,000 students attend independent schools in Australia
– Enrolments in independent schools in Australia grew by 3.9% in 2024
– Independent schools employ 19.6% of all teachers in Australian schools
– The locations of independent schools are 66.6% in major cities, 30.4% in regional areas, 3.5% in remote areas.
Happy Mother’s Day
Thank you to the P and F for organising the well-attended Mother’s Day lunch for Senior School mothers last week, and for the Mother’s Day Stall and Breakfast in the Junior School this week. All these events were joyous community occasions, and a lovely way to acknowledge the work of our School’s mothers.
I hope every TIGS mother has a wonderful day on Sunday. Please know that while we at Illawarra Grammar would like to think that we are having a major positive impact on the young lives in our care, we know that we fall well behind the impact of good mothers. Thank you for all you do to help us to teach well.
“Every step I take is because you first held my hand and showed me how to walk with courage.” From a grateful son.
Junior School News
Head of Junior School
Welcome to Term II
We’ve had a wonderful start to the term and it’s been a joy to see the students return with such enthusiasm. We are especially pleased to welcome Mrs Jessica Allard into her role as Director of Teaching and Learning, Junior School. Mrs Allard has already visited many classrooms, developing warm relationships with our students and staff, and offering valuable insight into our programs. We are thrilled to have her as part of our team.
Thank you for ensuring that students are wearing their full winter uniform, including appropriate hair, ribbons and shoes. Our uniform standards promote a strong sense of pride, respect and belonging among our students. Your ongoing support helps reinforce these expectations and ensures consistency across the School.
Please be reminded that only Year 6 students have permission to access the TIGS Library after school hours. During this time, students are expected to be engaged in completing school homework in a quiet and respectful manner. Students from Kindergarten to Year 5 who require supervision after School should attend the PEAK After School Care program. We thank you for your support in maintaining a calm and purposeful environment in the Library and for ensuring appropriate arrangements are made for younger students.
This term is filled with many special community events, and our Mother’s Day celebrations are always a standout. Our much-loved Mother’s Day Stall and Breakfast provide meaningful opportunities to recognise and honour the wonderful mothers and carers in our community. Thank you for your ongoing support; your presence helps make these moments memorable for the children and our school family.
A huge thank you to our P and F, especially our Vice President, Chrissy Latis, and her team for organising such an outstanding event. We are so grateful for the time, energy and care that goes into making these occasions so special for our community. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who helped with the Mother’s Day Stall; your contribution made a real difference and brought joy to many.
A reminder that parents are warmly welcome to attend our weekly Chapel services. This term, each class has been assigned a week to lead Chapel. You can find your child’s class allocation on their OLLE page. Please note that students are expected to remain at School until the conclusion of the school day, even if a parent attends Chapel.
We wish our Year 6 students and staff a fantastic trip to Canberra next week. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of Australian history, government and culture. We know they will represent our School with pride and look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return.
Rehearsals are in full swing for this year’s Junior School musical, The Little Mermaid Jnr. Students in Years 5 and 6 have been working exceptionally hard and their energy, commitment and creativity have been outstanding. It’s shaping up to be a captivating production, and we can’t wait to share it with you later this term. Please continue to keep your eye on communication regarding important updates. Thank you to our staff and families for your continued encouragement.
By Elliyah Barrat and Paolo Lu, Junior School Captains
Last Thursday, the Junior School held a special ANZAC Day Assembly to remember and honour the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the Australian Defence Force. The assembly began with an Acknowledgement of Country, paying respect to the Dharawal people and their Elders, and reminding us that we live under God’s grace on this land. We learned that ANZAC Day is a time when people all over Australia come together to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for our freedom.
During the service, students shared prayers, Bible readings and songs, including a moving performance of The Last ANZAC accompanied by violin and flute. We listened to the Ode and stood silently for the playing of The Last Post, followed by a minute of silence and The Rouse. Ms Clayton spoke about the importance of remembering those who have made sacrifices for us and how we can live with gratitude and peace. The service helped us understand the meaning behind ANZAC Day and why it is such an important part of Australian history.
We would like to thank all the staff and students who contributed to the service. It was a thoughtful and respectful event that reminded us of the freedom we enjoy today. As the bagpipes played, we left the assembly quietly, thinking about the ANZAC spirit of courage, service and hope for a peaceful future.
Elliyah – “On Anzac Day Paolo and I were invited to represent the Illawarra Grammar School at a Dawn Service in Wollongong. We had a very early start to the day, but it was a great privilege to be there. The service was very moving and solemn.”
Paolo – “Elliya and I heard about a local soldier who later became the mayor of Wollongong. We then laid a wreath on a Cenotaph in honour of our fallen soldiers. We will never forget this experience or the sacrifices of our service men and women.”
On Wednesday, 30 April, some students from Years 5 and 6 proudly represented Illawarra Grammar at the regional Illawarra da Vinci Decathlon, an academic competition celebrating academic skill, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking across ten disciplines.

But it was our Year 7 team which brought home the trophy, having secured an impressive first place in their first year of senior competition.
Our Year 7, 8 and 9 students will now proceed to the State Finals, taking place at Knox Grammar School later this term.

Saturday Library has recommenced and will be open to senior students (in Years 10, 11 and 12) every Saturday during term time for the rest of the year. Opening hours are 9.00am – 2.00pm.
Free Tuition from high-achieving TIGS’ alumni who are now studying at university will be available from 11.00am. Tuition offered: English, Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics.
Tickets are now on sale for the Year 12 Trivia Night.
Join us on Friday 30 May for a fun-filled evening themed The Wild West. Fancy dress is optional but encouraged, with prizes for best dressed.
All proceeds will support the Year 12 charity, The Water Gift.
You can pre-order a grazing platter when purchasing tickets, or bring your own food. Please note this is an alcohol-free event; a mocktail on arrival is included in the ticket price, with soft drinks and additional mocktails available for purchase.
We look forward to an enjoyable night hosted by our Year 12 students.
As we go into the third week of term, I would like to remind students of the importance of personal organisation. Over the first weeks of this term there has been a small, but larger than usual, number of students who have needed to borrow laptops or chargers from the Library for a sustained period. This service is provided to support learning for the rare, short-term situations in which a student is otherwise unable to access their own laptop.
Students who repeatedly need to leave lessons to charge their laptop or who need to book laptops out on a daily basis will be having an impact on their, and their peers’, learning and will reduce the ability of our Library staff to support other students.
Your support in ensuring that students are equipped each day with their own laptop and charger is greatly appreciated.
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics
Parent Teacher Interviews will be held in the Goodhew Library from 3.30pm – 7.00pm on the following dates:
- Year 11 – Tuesday, 27 May
- Year 10 – Tuesday, 3 June
- Year 7 – Tuesday, 10 June
- Year 9 – Tuesday, 17 June
- Year 8 – Tuesday, 22 July
Students are strongly encouraged to attend with their parents/guardians and are expected to wear full school uniform.
You will receive an email from School approximately two weeks prior to your relevant session/s with your unique login details. Once this has been received, you will be required to follow the following steps to login to the booking system:
- Log in to the TIGS Portal https://portal.tigs.nsw.edu.au/
- Click on the Booked Icon
- Click the Senior School Booked Icon
- Enter unique login details from the email
Please note that the system will be accessible from 5.00pm on the day the email is sent until 10.00am on the day of the Parent Teacher Interview evening.
You will be guided through the remaining steps after login. Please note the following points:
- Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples. If two parents/guardians wish to attend a single timeslot, one parent/guardian should make the booking, and both parents can attend that timeslot
- Booked prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians. You will only see timeslots that are available
- Please ensure that you confirm your bookings by clicking on the green plus sign to the right of the time selection window
- Once you have made your bookings, you can print the details
- You can log in and change bookings any time up to 10.00am on the day of the interviews
- If you see an exclamation mark symbol displayed alongside the class name, it means this teacher recommends that you book an interview
- Other parents may be making bookings while you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a timeslot is displayed to you as available but is then booked by another parent. If you attempt to book this time slot, it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.
If you are unable to attend your evening/s or find suitable timeslots, please contact the School to arrange an alternative time to speak with your child’s teacher/s.
If you have any problems or questions, please contact Ms Kerrie Sheldon via email at ksheldon@tigs.nsw.edu.au
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics
This term, students will receive their Half Yearly Reports, which provide a valuable snapshot of their academic progress so far this year. These reports are designed to offer meaningful insights into each student’s current achievements, highlight areas presenting the greatest opportunities for growth, and reflect their broader contribution to the life of the School.
At Illawarra Grammar, we believe that reporting is not merely a record of past performance, but an important part of the learning process. Reports help students develop self-awareness and agency by identifying their strengths and areas for improvement. For families, they serve as a platform for meaningful conversations about learning, study habits and personal goals. Importantly, they also enable teachers to continue shaping instruction and support based on each student’s evolving learning needs.
Please note that Half Yearly Reports will be accessible at 5.00pm on OLLE on the following dates:
- Year 11 – Friday 23 May
- Year 10 – Friday 30 May
- Year 7 – Friday 6 June
- Year 9 – Friday 13 June
- Year 8 – Friday 20 June
To access reports via OLLE, please follow the steps below:
- Log in to OLLE via the TIGS Portal under the Parent tab.
- In the My Students section, click the three dots next to your child’s name and select Academic Reports.
- Alternatively, click on your child’s name and then select the Academic Reports button.
These reports will frame the conversations at Parent Teacher Interviews. Should you have any further questions about your child’s progress after Parent Teacher Interviews, please do not hesitate to follow up with the relevant classroom teacher.
Year 8 Biggest Morning Tea – Friday 23 May
On Friday 23 May, Year 8 students will be hosting the Biggest Morning Tea to raise funds for the Cancer Council. We would love the support of Year 8 families by providing nut-free baked goods or treats for the event. All donated items must be nut-free and delivered to the Library by 8.40am on the morning of the event.
We encourage the whole school community to get involved by bringing gold coins to purchase items at recess and lunch on the Library Lawn. Every dollar raised will go towards supporting cancer research, prevention programs and patient support services.
Thank you for supporting this important cause!
General School News
Illawarra Grammar School spirit was strong on the last day of Term I as our students took part in the Cross Country Carnival, held at the Kembla Joggers course in Stream Hill. Despite grey skies early in the day, the weather cleared just in time for students to hit the track with energy and determination.
With points awarded to each house for participation and performance, every student gave their best effort to contribute to the overall house tally. Coligan House claimed a clean sweep, taking out top honours in both the Junior School and Senior School competitions.
Well done to all students for their effort and sportsmanship. A team of more than 130 students has now been selected to represent Illawarra Grammar at the CASA Cross Country Carnival.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16
For every war that Australia has fought, a great sacrifice has been paid on two fronts: by those who have served and by those who have sent loved ones to serve. God knows what it’s like to be the sacrifice and to sacrifice his beloved. God the Father so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son to conquer death. But to do so, the Son had to lay down his life for the sins of the world.
At the cross, we see a grieving Father and a suffering Saviour. Because God knows what it’s like to lose his Beloved, he can comfort us in our grief and suffering.
On Anzac Day, we honour and commemorate the servicemen and servicewomen who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation. But we also honour and thank those who sent their loved ones to serve.
Lest we forget.
