Welcome
A very warm welcome is extended to our new families. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy being part of our community, and that you soon feel well connected to the School.
We value communication at Illawarra Grammar School, and want our parents to be able to clarify concerns and/or receive answers promptly. In order to do so, it is recommended that any queries from Junior School parents go directly to the class teacher, and in the Senior School, any queries go to the Dean who will triage them appropriately.

January Letter
It is our practice to communicate with parents through the fortnightly newsletter or through OLLE. However, in January, we usually mail out a letter to our families which include items such as the fridge magnet calendar and a copy of the previous year’s Academic Highlights. Please contact the School if you did not receive this correspondence earlier this month.
Bondi
I am sure that you joined with me in horror as we witnessed the terrorist attack on the Jewish community in Bondi during the holidays.
I want to reassure our community that families of all faiths are most welcome at this School. Goodness is one of our six key values, and this is practised through acts of kindness, inclusion and respect. Over the holidays, I wrote to Mr David Ossip, the President of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies, extending our condolences and best wishes to the Sydney Jewish community. Moreover, the staff who were at School on 22 January, the national day of mourning, held a minute’s silence at 11.00 am out of respect for the grieving families.
The Bondi attack was a salient reminder that safety and freedom are valued features of our country, but we must actively cherish these characteristics, and work hard to protect them.
Head of Junior School
Earlier this week, I wrote to our Junior School families informing them that the new Head of Junior School from Term II 2026 will be Mrs Jessica Ford. Mrs Ford is currently our inaugural Director of Academic and Pastoral Care having joined us this term from Trinity Grammar Preparatory School (Pre-K to Year 6) in Strathfield. Mrs Ford was the stand-out candidate from an impressive group of applicants, and I confident that she will do an outstanding job in this important role.
Mrs Jess Allard will move from her current Director of Teaching and Learning role into the role of Director of Academic and Pastoral Care from Term II. This means that we are currently advertising for a new Director of Teaching and Learning to commence in Term II.
Mrs Ford is looking forward to using this term to learn about our School and our families, and to working with Ms Clayton as she hands over the reins prior to her departure at the end of this term.
Please join me in congratulating both Mrs Ford and Mrs Allard on their new roles.
Holiday Work
Much has happened in the School over the holidays. As well as the usual substantial property and IT maintenance, we have also seen our Junior School field extended, our Senior School field refreshed to serve as a soccer field and two futsal fields, and the new volleyball court installed. And of course, there has been considerable progress with the new kitchen and the Hoskins Building. We are indeed indebted to Mr Field and his team for their work during this non-term time.
Several of our Year 12 students and their teachers spent last week at school working on their HSC major works; teachers have been in and out for a few weeks now, preparing for the new year.
We are all looking forward to the new year of teaching and learning.

Junior School News
Head of Junior School
A new school year always welcomes a fresh adventure, new opportunities, friendships to explore, goals to be set, and the excitement that comes from transitioning to a new grade. Term I commenced with joy, laughter, plenty of smiles and shiny shoes! Our Junior School students happily bounced along the drive as they returned to school, excited to catch up with friends and engage in the learning ahead. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for your partnership in 2026.
A very special welcome to all of our new families and students joining The Illawarra Grammar School this year. Your children have been embraced wholeheartedly into our community and have enjoyed a careful transition, supported by class buddies. Kindergarten students have settled in seamlessly.
We value and look forward to working in partnership with you this year. Together, we can support your child’s learning, growth and wellbeing, ensuring they feel confident, supported and ready to thrive.
This year, we are delighted to welcome Mrs Jessica Ford, initially as our Director of Academic and Pastoral Care and then as our new Head of Junior School in Term II. Mrs Ford brings wisdom, vision and a commitment to supporting every student’s learning, growth and wellbeing. I will be working closely with her throughout Term I to ensure a smooth handover, alongside our dedicated leadership team and Junior School staff who provide exceptional practice and expertise across the Junior School.
We also warmly welcome Mr Andy Richards as Stage 2 Coordinator and Year 4 classroom teacher, and welcome back Mrs Nicki Stanis from Long Service Leave, who will be teaching Year 6. Miss Sophie Short and Ms Jade Fogarty join our Prep team this year, and we look forward to the contributions they will make to our School.
We are thrilled about the move into the Hoskins Building in Term II, which will provide Year 6 students with a dedicated learning space and all Junior School students with access to the Library and STEM areas. This purpose-designed environment encourages creativity, collaboration and deep learning, reflecting the quality and future-focussed education we provide.
As we begin the year, we remind families of the need to ensure students are in the correct uniform, with appropriate haircuts and jewellery. The school hat is compulsory, and all belongings, including swimming and sports clothing, must be clearly labelled with your child’s name. Please check daily that your child has collected their lunch box, drink bottle and other items to minimise lost property. Unlabelled items are often discarded, contributing to environmental waste, so your support in this matter is greatly appreciated. Please refer to your child’s diary for more information.
An email was sent mid January regarding our extensive cocurricular program in the Junior School. Families are already completing the Expression of Interest form and activities will begin in Week 2. Additional lunchtime clubs will commence in Week 3 providing further opportunities for students to explore their interests beyond the classroom. A weekly calendar is available on the OLLE cocurricular page.
Junior School students dismissal routine will be slightly different for Week 1 and 2 (Friday 30 January – Friday 6 February) to assist with Kindergarten settling in.
Weeks 1 and 2 – Pick-up times

- 1-2 (with K siblings) – 3.00pm

Senior School News
Head of Senior School
As I begin my role as Head of Senior School, I am filled with excitement for the future of The Illawarra Grammar School at this significant moment in the School’s history. Most importantly, I am excited for the futures of our students, and I feel privileged to play a part in preparing them to realise their goals.
Adolescence is a formative time when, in the right environment, young people discover their God-given talents and cultivate the skills and dispositions necessary for their futures. We know that when school culture balances aspiration with a genuine sense of belonging, young people can truly flourish.
My focus as your Head of Senior School is to ensure that every student is supported and inspired to pursue excellence. It is through striving for excellence across the academic program and within the rich cocurricular opportunities available at our School that students develop the character and future readiness they need for life beyond the school gates.
As such, I am pleased that from our values of Goodness, Gladness, Generosity, Grace, Gratitude and Grit, in 2026 we will explore Grit; the personality trait characterised by perseverance and passion for long-term goals.
I am eager to partner with parents and carers in creating an environment where students feel known, valued, stretched and celebrated. I look forward to meeting you in the coming weeks and sharing in the exciting journey ahead for The Illawarra Grammar School community.
To further enhance learning for all students, your sons and daughters will have already experienced greater clarity around classroom expectations. These feature a renewed focus on punctuality, and the consistent expectation that devices remain away until requested by a teacher. These expectations are enhanced by further improvements to classroom environments over the summer, and reduced visual distractions in classrooms to support student engagement and focus.
A further strategy for reducing students’ cognitive load and enhancing student wellbeing is the use of teacher-organised seating rotations for all classes. Intentionality in the planning of student seating in classrooms allows more equitable access to learning across all students. Teachers will continue to organise the seating for students in their classes in line with evidence for improved student learning outcomes.
Please note the following important changes to our Pastoral Care system, particularly in relation to Merits and Demerits:
- Parents will now receive an alert via the OLLE app to inform them if a Merit or Demerit has been issued for their child through the Pastoral Care system (download OLLE app here)
- Parents will be able to view Merits and Demerits immediately once this information has been entered by a staff member
- Demerits will now replace Infringements, with the new demerit process outlined on page 9 of the Senior School Diary
- Parents will not receive an email notification when a Pastoral Care entry has been issued as they will be able to access this information directly through the OLLE app.
The Cocurricular Overview for Term I and associated expression of interest forms are available on the OLLE page Senior School Cocurricular Activities. I encourage students to involve themselves broadly in the life of the School. All activities begin in Week 3, allowing students time in Week 2 to hear more about the opportunities available.
Mr Adrian Deck, Head of Sport
Representative Sport
Illawarra Grammar students from Years 7-12 have numerous opportunities throughout the year to represent the School in their chosen sport. Students are encouraged to go to the Sports OLLE page and keep an eye on Daily Notices.

If your child is interested in joining a TIGS team, please complete this expression of interest form so we can discover the level of interest.
Should you have any questions regarding the above information, or any other sport related matters, please do not hesitate to me at adeck@tigs.nsw.edu.au
We will be continuing to open Goodhew Library to senior students on Saturdays during term time, offering a place for students in Years 10 – 12 to study.
Saturday Library will commence at the end of Week 2, Saturday 7 February. The Library will be open from 9.00am until 2.00pm and students are free to arrive and leave at a time that best suits them.
The availability of tutors is currently being confirmed and will be advertised to students in Years 10 – 12 over the coming weeks.
As we commence the 2026 academic year, I would like to take this opportunity to remind students, parents and guardians to familiarise themselves with our School’s Assessment, Academic Integrity, and Homework policies. These policies are designed to uphold the highest standards of academic honesty, to ensure fairness and transparency in our assessment provisions, and to support students in developing study habits that promote successful learning.
The policies are available on OLLE.
Year 7 parents and students should note that, to support a smooth academic transition into the Senior School, mandatory homework for the first six weeks of Term I will be limited to English, Mathematics and Languages, with a duration of approximately 10–12 minutes per subject per evening. In addition, regular typing practice through TypingClub is recommended as a daily five minute habit throughout this time. From Week 7, expectations as per the Homework Policy will commence.
Students in Years 7-12 can order their lunch online via Flexischools OR purchase it over the counter. Please note preference will be given to online orders if stock levels are low. Payment cannot be made with a phone, only cash, card, and Student ID Card will be accepted. More information can be found on OLLE.
5.30pm, Wednesday 4 February
For our Year 7 families, this event provides an opportunity to learn more about Year 7’s start to the year and our upcoming camp taking place in Week 3. We are confident the camp will serve to assist Year 7 in better knowing their peers, and in creating a strong sense of belonging in the cohort and we look forward to sharing more information.
The event will take place in the IGC, commencing at 5.30pm and finishing by 6.45pm. Please park in the school car park accessed from the top of Powell Street or in surrounding streets.
Monday 9 February
A highlight of the Sporting Calendar, our Swimming Carnival, is a great chance for students to participate, and to show House pride. Students arrive at School as normal, where a bus will transport students to and from the pool. Students are to wear sports uniform with their house shirt and bring sunscreen and all food and drink. See the Consent2Go form for more details.
Mr Chris Breheny, Head of Academics
It’s a privilege to celebrate the academic achievements of our Class of 2025 in the Higher School Certificate. Their results demonstrate not only academic excellence, but also sustained effort, grit, and a deep commitment to learning.
In 2025, our School was ranked 55th in New South Wales for overall HSC achievement, an outstanding result that also places us as the top‑performing school in the Illawarra and South Coast region. These outcomes affirm our place among the leading schools in the state and underscore the aspiration and rigour that characterise our teaching and learning culture.
This 2025 HSC cohort achieved exceptional individual and collective outcomes. Most notably, Isabella Denley achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.85, placing her among the highest‑achieving students in NSW. Isabella was also ranked 8th in New South Wales for Legal Studies, an exceptional accomplishment that speaks to her industrious work ethic and astute intellect.
Academic breadth and consistency were also defining features of this cohort’s results. One in three students achieved an ATAR above 90, with 10 students securing ATARs above 95. Of these, four students achieved ATARs above 98: Isabella Denley, Saxon Parish, Bora Kim and Alexis Evans. Three students were named on the NSW All‑Round Achievers List, while an outstanding 52% of students were placed on the NSW Distinguished Achievers List for achieving Band 6 or E4 results in one or more courses. Together, these results highlight the depth of academic success across the cohort and across a broad range of disciplines.
Our School’s continued strength in English is particularly noteworthy. We were ranked 7th in New South Wales for English Advanced, Extension 1 and Extension 2, making us the 2nd‑ranked independent school in the state across these courses. Additionally, we were ranked 9th in New South Wales for English Standard and EAL/D, demonstrating excellence across the full spectrum of English courses.
Adding to these successes, we were proud to see three HSC Showcase selections – Charlotte Wall, Victoria Di Martino and Alexis Evans – recognised for the exceptional quality of their major works.
These results are testament to the determination, discipline, aspiration, and hard work of our students, supported by the expertise and passion of our teachers and the strong partnership we share with our broader school community. They give clear expression to a culture of high expectations and the collective pursuit of learning.
While these results imbue us with a strong sense of pride and satisfaction, they also carry a deeper responsibility. Our task now is to build upon this success – to learn from it, refine our practices further, and continue raising expectations for ourselves and our students. In doing so, we ensure that each cohort is not merely measured against past success, but empowered to surpass it.

In the beginning God…
Genesis 1:1
Across literature, psychology and philosophy, there’s a shared insight: we live by stories. The stories we absorb quietly shape how we make sense of success and failure, suffering and hope. Biblical stories, at their best, don’t flatten life into moral lessons to apply. They expand life, widening the horizon and inviting students into a bigger story of God, the world and themselves. With this in mind, Junior School Chapel this term will explore Awe & Wonder: God’s Amazing World, asking one big question: What does God’s world tell us about God? At the same time, Senior School Chapel will focus on the story of Joseph, a powerful case study in grit, perseverance and faithfulness when life takes unexpected turns. These are stories God invites us to live by, shaping faith, hope and love.
