Opening the New Play Equipment
Earlier this week, students and a few special guests gathered for the official opening of the new play equipment for our youngest students. Under the beautiful blue sky, it was a joy to hear the speeches of gratitude from our young orators who rejoiced in their wonderful playground and its equipment.
Thank you to Mrs Taggart, Mrs Huda and Mrs Latis for attending this special occasion and for representing the School’s P and F which generously provided the funds for the equipment.
NAPLAN 2024
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Conducted in May each year, NAPLAN is a nationwide measure to assist parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community to determine whether young Australians are developing the necessary skills in literacy and numeracy.
Measured against national standards, NAPLAN tests are one aspect of each school’s assessment and reporting process and do not replace the extensive, ongoing assessments made by teachers about each student’s performance.
NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four areas (or ‘domains’) of: reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
The results are classified into one of four proficiency levels: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs Additional Support.
The results for Illawarra Grammar are summarised below. It is pleasing to see that we are operating well above the state average in most areas, and even more pleasing to see the ongoing improvement in results, especially in the literacy areas.
While NAPLAN results are only one small measure of assessment, I find them to be a helpful indicator of our students’ progress, especially as they move from year to year through the School.
Taj Mahal
Under the extraordinary leadership of Mrs Usha Fernadez and Dr Sharad and Dr Lata Tamhane, the Taj Mahal committee has spent many hours organising tomorrow night’s Taj Mahal which promises to provide us with a wonderfully festive occasion. I look forward to seeing you there.
Father’s Day
Happy Father’s Day to all our dads, grandfathers and father-figures. The role you play in raising happy, healthy children cannot be overstated. Thank you.
Junior School News
Head of Junior School
We are delighted to share that our Father’s Day breakfast was a resounding success! It was a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together and celebrate the special role of fathers and father figures.
Thank you to our dedicated P and F members, whose outstanding organisation and coordination made this event possible. Their hard work created a memorable experience for all.
Thank you to all involved with the coordination of our Father’s Day stall also. We are confident that there will be many smiles come Sunday.
Mrs Karen Wallace – Deputy Head of Junior School (Curriculum)
It is always reassuring to be ahead of the game, and that is exactly where we are at. The new Junior School Learning Framework focuses on the implementation of a Knowledge-rich curriculum and the recent release of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) updated syllabi in Science, Creative Arts, PDHPE and HSIE encompass this completely. NESA states that:
“The attainment of knowledge is a key goal of education … Knowledge underpins our ability to think and do. Students learn new ideas with reference to their existing knowledge. In each learning area, background knowledge committed to long-term memory is vital to literacy development and underpins the ability to think critically and creatively.”
Source: NSW Curriculum – NESA
Our Junior School teachers have embraced the new Learning Framework by developing learning opportunities that are coherent, intentional and designed to build the knowledge and vocabulary required by each learning area, whether it’s vocabulary in Mathematics, scientific theory or historical inquiry. During professional learning, teachers have been unpacking mastery learning and focusing on ensuring that content and skills are taught explicitly.
The ultimate Celebration of Learning takes place when students reach Year 6. This year it will be called the Year 6 Showcase of Learning and takes place on Thursday 26 September, starting in the IGC at 4.00pm before moving to the Goodhew Research Centre (Library) and concluding at 6.00pm.
The theme for this year’s Showcase is ‘The Tapestry of Australia’ and forms an extension of previous class investigations into the Australian government and the waves of migration that have taken place over time.
In groups, students have explored issues such as the Impact of WWII on Australian Society, Women’s Rights, the environmental impacts on natural treasures such as The Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, and much more.
We look forward to having Year 6 parents and carers join us.
Ms Natasha Hutchins – Deputy Head of Junior School (Administration)
We want to remind everyone of the importance of adhering to our school uniform standards for personal appearance. All articles of a student’s clothing must be labelled with the student’s name to ensure lost items can be returned. Lost items that are not labelled or collected within a week will be donated to the Second-Hand Uniform Shop.
Clean and polished black leather lace up shoes should be worn with the formal uniform and white sneakers for PE or Sport. Black or coloured sneakers are not appropriate. Each student must have a raincoat packed into their backpack ready to use at all times.
Boys’ hair is to be above the collar, not covering eyes and off the ears. Girls’ long hair (below the collar), must be tied back with a regulation ribbon or scrunchie, as supplied by the Uniform Shop. Jewellery, nail polish or makeup must not be worn by any student except for only the smallest, most plain stud earrings.
Blazers must be worn by Year 3 to Year 6 students travelling to and from School during the winter semester and worn to Chapel, Assembly and official school events throughout the year. Students will receive a reminder, then a warning and finally a detention for repeated non-compliance. Please help us maintain these standards to ensure a positive and focused school environment.

Last week, staff, students, parents and carers had an opportunity to attend ‘The Works’ Exhibition. This event showcased the academic and creative achievements of our HSC students, featuring their Major Works in Visual Arts, Music, Timber, Design and Technology, Society and Culture, and English Extension 2.
The standards on display never fail to impress, but it is often the personal stories behind the works that provide the greatest food for thought. Visitors contemplated painted scenes depicting the experiences of war-torn Syria, engaging with a personal exploration of faith and historical colonialism, or appreciating the heartfelt dedications that inspired some of the exceptional timber pieces. It was a true privilege to share in the exceptional work that has been undertaken by these talented Year 12 students.
Illawarra Grammar will play Shellharbour Anglican College in the second game of our rugby union tri-series this Friday 30 August at UOW Oval 1.
- 4.00pm – Under 14s 10-a-side fixture
- 5.00pm – Under 18s 15-a-side fixture

Year 9 Commerce students had the opportunity to collaborate with the Zig Zag Hub and be part of The Young Eyes Festival of Innovation. Students developed their own business idea and were able to pitch their business concept to an expert panel of local business entrepreneurs. Over a series of workshops, students were guided through the development, design and implementation phase of their original business idea. The workshops along with the face to face experiences gave students great exposure to the real business world and an insight into the key functions of creating and running a successful business.
The final round to be held in September at the Innovation Campus will showcase the finalist from a range of local schools. The winner will receive one year mentoring from experienced business people where they will provide the necessary skills to help the winning student launch their business into the real market.
Here is what Year 9 student Sienna Bohm had to say about the experience:
“Innovative Eyes is a competition promoting young entrepreneurs in the Wollongong area involving ten local schools. Our Commerce class was involved in the first round in which we were taught how to pitch an idea. Fourteen students from Illawarra Grammar were selected to progress to the next round. The second round involved a more formal pitch to two business leaders, (think ‘Shark Tank’!) in which I pitched an idea called ‘Myoptica’. The idea was to combine three existing technologies into one hybrid contact lens that would aim to slow down short-sightedness by careful design of the hard lens which would be shaped to correctly mould the cornea of the wearer and thereby achieve 20:20 vision within a week. The audience asked some really challenging questions but I think I gave a good defence of my idea. We find out by the end of August how we did and I’m hoping that my idea will get through to the final.”
In 2025, in keeping with the School’s ongoing commitment to promoting service and leadership, students from Year 10 and 11 will take up formal positions of leadership as Captains and Prefects. These positions will last for one year, and commence at the start of Term IV. Parents and carers of students in Years 10 and 11 will receive an invitation to attend our Leadership Induction Ceremony over the coming weeks. Until then, please note the date of this event: 11.10am on Tuesday 22 October.
A reminder that Year 11 students will be on study leave during Week 7 and Week 8 and will only be required to attend School at the dates and times on which they have examinations. All students have been provided with an examination timetable and are encouraged to make full use of the available time to prepare themselves to complete these final assessments of their Year 11 (Preliminary) courses. The Library will remain open on Saturdays from 9.00am – 1.00pm during term time to support them in their revision and ongoing study.
Students in Year 11 will no doubt realise that Year 12 is imminent and as Preliminary courses conclude and HSC courses commence, students will benefit from access to HSC-specific textbooks and resources to support their ongoing learning. If your son/daughter is confident of the subjects they will be undertaking in Year 12, I would strongly recommend that orders be placed (using the link below) no later than Sunday 15 September to ensure they have access to the learning resources for the start of their HSC courses.
The link below will take you directly to the Campion website for ordering Year 12 books.
For reference, the School Code is CKXW.
Should you have any questions or encounter any issues please contact the Senior School’s Curriculum Administrator, Ms Sheldon by emailing ksheldon@tigs.nsw.edu.au.
Last week, I had great pleasure in sending formal invitations to our Year 12 parents and carers to invite them to attend these important rites of passage for our graduating Class of 2024 ahead of their final HSC examinations.
The Graduation event will commence at 9.00am on Wednesday 25 September and will include musical items, speeches and presentation of prizes and awards to the graduating students. Morning tea will follow. Later on, commencing at 6.30pm, the formal Valete Dinner will take place in The Grand Ballroom at the Novotel in North Wollongong. This event will conclude at 10.30pm. Parents and carers wishing to attend are encouraged to complete the RSVP as quickly as possible.

In addition to our weekly school sport opportunities, Illawarra Grammar students have the opportunity to represent our School in multiple sporting Gala Days, competitions and carnivals. The first step for students in their representative sporting journey beyond the school is through the CASA network of schools.
CASA (formerly known as NASSA), is the Co-educational Anglican Schools Association. It was established by six Anglican schools in the Diocese of Sydney in 2002 and later grew to include eight schools. After 21 successful years of sport, the organisation was rebranded to represent a forward facing association of like-minded member schools.
CASA is the first step in the pathway to State Representation for students attending the member schools. Its purpose is to provide interschool sports competition, gala days and carnivals between the member schools for students in Years 2 to 12. CASA encourages and promotes citizenship, connection and education through sport with member schools.
As a part of the rebranding, CASA has introduced a website. The purpose of this website is to create a centralised form of information, including announcements, schedules and results. CASA would like visitors to the website to be informed with up to date content, contact information and dates of events.
Learn about the CASA story, member schools, pathways to representation and calendar dates for upcoming events through the website. https://casa.nsw.edu.au/

Blessed are those whose strength is in you, who have set their hearts on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, they make it a place of springs…They go from strength to strength, till each appears before God in Zion.
Psalm 84:5-7
The School’s guiding principle, or motto, is taken from Psalm 84, “De Virtute in Virtutem” – From Strength to Strength. In the context of the psalm, the image is of a pilgrim walking through ‘the valley of weeping’ (‘Baca’ means weeping). But their presence turns this place of sorrow into a place of ‘springs’: that is, a place of thriving. And all the while, the experience doesn’t move them from refreshed to weary, but instead ‘from strength to strength’; they have a source of strength and power that increases over time, refreshing their own spirits as well as the people and world around them. What is the source of this endless strength? Verse 5, directed to God: ‘Blessed are those whose strength is in you’.
