Hoskins Building
There is a growing level of excitement in the School now that the old H Block has been demolished and the site of our new Hoskins Building has been revealed.
The senior staff and I, along with Mr Field, our Director of Operations and Facilities, are currently finalising the interior fittings of the building. The STEM Lab and the new Library will be wonderful assets for our Junior School students.
But, arguably, it is the upper level Lecture Theatre that will prove to be the greatest asset. Because the Lecture Theatre will be the domain of Senior School students, every student will eventually benefit from this wonderful learning space. Having a facility that generously accommodates a whole year group for presentations, lectures and meetings will add a level of sophistication to the education that our students receive.
I ask parents to join me in contributing to the cost of outfitting this new Lecture Theatre. Before the end of the financial year, tax deductible donations can be made. While every donation will be gratefully received, donations of $5000 will purchase the naming rights on a chair in the Lecture Theatre. Learn more here.
Huge thanks to the parents who have already contributed in this way. Your contribution towards the education of present and future TIGS students is very much appreciated.
Strategic Plan Consultation
Many thanks to the parents who attended one of the three recent consultation groups about our next Strategic Plan and the direction of the School. I very much appreciated the helpful suggestions that were made about the way forward.
If you were unable to attend one of these consultation groups and have some suggestions about the future direction of Illawarra Grammar, I’d be very pleased to hear from you. Please feel free to send your comments to me at strategicplan@tigs.nsw.edu.au by the end of this term.
Uniform Review
It is customary in schools such as ours to review the uniform every ten years or so. Given that our uniforms have not been reviewed since 2016, it is time to gather some feedback from students and parents about the uniform.
The Senior School and Junior School students have been asked to pass on their thoughts about the uniform, and I invite Illawarra Grammar parents to do likewise.
I’m keen to hear the features of the uniform which are valued, as well as those features that are of concern. I’m not envisaging major changes to the uniform although this will depend on the extent of the feedback comments.
Please send your feedback about the uniform to uniformfeedback@tigs.nsw.edu.au by Friday 30 May 2025. Also, please ensure that your feedback is specific and signed so that follow-up contact can be made if further clarity is needed.
Uniform Shop Relocation
As has been mentioned in previous newsletters, Perm-A-Pleat is moving our Uniform Shop to a new shop front in Dapto. We have now been advised that the fit-out of the new shop will take place next week, with trading to commence from Tuesday 3 June.
Online uniform orders can still be placed but delivery to the School and onsite collection from the new Dapto store will commence from 3 June. If your child is missing a required uniform item next week and a replacement is not possible, please place a note in their diary for their classroom teacher or Dean.

Junior School News
Head of Junior School
In Week 5, we will recognise National Reconciliation Week, with the 2025 theme “Bridging Now to Next”. This theme highlights the important connection between the past, present and future, and calls all Australians to walk forward together, drawing on the lessons of the past to guide our shared future.
Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will engage in meaningful classroom experiences that will deepen their understanding of reconciliation. As outlined by our Year 6 community captains, these activities support the development of empathy, cultural understanding, and a commitment to unity for our young learners.
On Wednesday 21 May, our students joined thousands of others across the country in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), a beloved event that celebrates reading and literacy. This year’s selected book was The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel.
Each year, NSS encourages children to enjoy the shared experience of reading the same story at the same time, promoting a love of books and storytelling. We were delighted to take part in this joyful event and thank Mrs Stanis and our K – 6 staff for their preparations in bringing this special story to life for our students.
We’re excited for the Kindergarten to Year 2 Athletics Carnival, happening on Tuesday 27 May from 11.00am to 12.45pm!
Students have been practising enthusiastically and learning House chants in preparation for the big day. They are also invited to create a poster (no larger than A3) to support their House.
Students should wear their regular sports uniform with an optional splash of House colour, such as socks, headbands or ribbons.
We warmly welcome parents and families to attend and cheer on our youngest athletes. We thank the P&F for having organised a cake stall for visiting families to enjoy on the day.
Please be aware that baklava style treats, nutella, macarons and anything else containing nuts will not be permitted and allergy-friendly options (e.g. egg-free, dairy-free, gluten-free) are encouraged.
Please note there is no on-site parking available. We can’t wait to see you there!
Mr Nick Hackett, Head of Senior School

This week, our students participated in the da Vinci Decathlon, showcasing their talents in problem-solving, creativity and collaboration. We look forward to sharing the state results once they are released. Watch this space!
We are excited to announce our very first Junior School Walkathon which will be held on Wednesday 25 June (Week 9)!
This wonderful event has been thoughtfully organised by our Year 6 parent representatives in partnership with the Parents and Friends Association (P&F). The Walkathon is a fun and active way for our students to come together as a community while raising funds for exciting new intiatives, such as the Junior School STEM Lab.
Students will soon receive information about how they can get involved and seek sponsorship for their walk. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our Year 6 parent representatives and the P&F for bringing this initiative to life.
We look forward to a fantastic day full of energy and community spirit!
We are delighted to share some wonderful news. Dr Carswell, our Junior School STEM Coordinator, has recently completed her Doctor of Education! This achievement reflects her dedication to lifelong learning and educational leadership. We are so fortunate to have her as part of our school community and congratulate her on this well-deserved milestone.
Please be reminded that Junior School carline procedures are outlined on the Transport page in OLLE.
To ensure a smooth and safe drop-off and pick-up process, please follow these guidelines:
Morning Drop-Off
The inside lane (right hand lane) is designated for Piper Centre parking only. Please do not use this lane for Junior School drop-off.
Afternoon Pick-Up
The middle lane must remain clear until 3.00pm to allow for vehicle manoeuvring.
Families picking up from the Piper Centre are strongly encouraged to arrive before 2.30pm or after 3.30pm to help ease congestion.
Carline Collection Times
Kindergarten – Year 2: 3.00pm – 3.10pm
Year 3 – Year 6 (and any Kindergarten – Year 2 siblings): 3.10pm – 3.40pm
View the full procedures document here.
We are working on updating the signage in the Junior School car park to assist with the smooth running of carline.
Last week, our Year 6 students travelled to Canberra for a two-night excursion as part of their unit Our Democratic Nation. They visited key sites including Parliament House, Old Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the AIS and Questacon.
Students participated in a full program of learning. A highlight was visiting the House of Representatives and the Senate, seeing their classroom learning in action. The students showed great interest, maturity and enthusiasm throughout the trip.
Here’s what some students had to say:
Gabe (6A): “My favourite part was the War Memorial. It was really interesting.”
Amelia (6P): “The food and being with my friends made it so fun.”
Harriet (6S): “I liked seeing Parliament House and learning how they count votes.”
Marlow (6Y): “Questacon was awesome, especially the drop slide!”
We thank our Year 6 teachers, Mr Yeo and Dr Carswell for their support and supervision throughout the trip. A special thank you to Mrs Young for her excellent organisation and coordination of the excursion.
We also acknowledge the Australian Government for providing $30 per student through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) program. This funding, paid directly to the School after the excursion, helps support valuable learning opportunities like this one.
Senior School News
Head of Senior School
This week our Head Prefect, Marcelle Davis-Cook, and Deputy Head Prefect, Alyssa Jeffries, both represented the School in the Regional Finals of the Rostrum Voice of Youth Public Speaking competition, held at St Gregory’s College in Campbelltown. Both students excelled with Alyssa, who spoke about Artificial Intelligence, finishing as overall runner-up and Marci winning first place with an address that sought to identify what she had learned from her international success in the field of Snowboard Cross.
Marci will now travel to the State Finals taking place later this term – we are excited to see how she fares. Well done indeed to both students.
Our talented Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 da Vinci Decathlon teams proudly represented The Illawarra Grammar School at the State Finals held at Knox Grammar School this week.
Competing against more than 70 schools from across New South Wales, our teams demonstrated strong performances across a range of disciplines including Code Breaking, English, Ideation, Science, Art and Poetry, Cartography, Engineering, Mathematics and Creative Producers (Drama).
A standout achievement came from our Year 8 team, who placed first in the state in the Art and Poetry category.
A number of students involved in the newly-launched Theatresports cocurricular activity competed in the local heats of the ‘Theatresports Schools Challenge’ on Tuesday night this week. Student performances were skilful, hilarious and very entertaining to watch. Aubrey Koll, Year 10, offers a personal reflection on the event:
On Tuesday 20 May, seven students from Years 10 – 11 competed in the heats of the TheatreSports School Challenge, achieving stellar results in our inaugural attempt. Our senior team of Lucy Bernie, Yasmin Matar, Sienna Page and Lola Stephenson finished first in the senior category and second overall; our intermediate team of Georgia Agnew (who was unfortunately unable to compete due to injury), Leon Do, Zahra Freeman and me finished in first place in the intermediate category and achieved first place overall.
Now, some of you may be wondering, “What is theatresports?” Well, here I go… Theatresports is a competition where teams of three to five compete against each other in a series of improvisation games scored by a panel of judges. These range from 1-minute short scenes such as “death in a minute” to 4-minute epic scenes. All improvisation games are made up on the spot with mere moments for the team to formulate an outline of the approach they will take.
TheatreSports is such an exciting competition that I absolutely love because you just never know what scenarios you will be presented with, from two grannies robbing a bank to finding out your child is a monkey, it really is one of the funniest, most confidence-boosting and energetic activities I have ever been involved in!
In our drama class, improv games are always a great way to warm up and let loose, as well as having heaps of fun and laughs, and every Wednesday at lunch Mr Trenerry’s Drama Club is all about TheatreSports games – so anyone who’d like to find out more or to be involved can come along and join us.
Having overcome some fierce and skilful competition from a range of local schools, the two Illawarra Grammar teams will now progress to the semi-finals which will be held in Sydney. With future competitors in the making growing in confidence and talent each week at Drama Club, I think it’s safe to say that TheatreSports has very much arrived at The Illawarra Grammar School and will quickly establish itself among our existing cocurricular activities as an enjoyable, challenging and popular cocurricular activity enjoyed by students of all ages.
Term II has been very busy with a large number of debating and public speaking engagements for Years 7-12. The State finals of the da Vinci Decathalon have been in full swing this week, students are currently preparing for the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) being held in early June and there are a range of sporting, Duke of Edinburgh, Performing Arts and other activities on offer.
A reminder that parents and students are able to access the Cocurricular Calendar through OLLE by selecting the 7-12 ‘Senior School’ tile and then the ‘Cocurricular Activities’ tile (click here). This cocurricular page displays the calendar for the current term and also provides links to specific activities via the Academic, Sports, The Arts, Community Service, Cultural and Service Tours and Duke of Edinburgh tiles. The Cocurricular Calendar is hyperlinked allowing visitors to click on an activity of interest in order to be taken to the relevant information pages for each activity.
Students interested in participating in a particular activity should contact the teacher listed on the information page and look out for information provided to them via Daily Notices.
For information, the Cocurricular Calendar is updated at the beginning of each term as new activities become available.
Mrs Naomi Sullivan – Head of Academic and Pastoral Care
The Senior School Wellbeing – Parent Support page on OLLE has been curated to assist parents in finding relevant information and support for their child in the Senior School.
The page is easy to navigate and can help parents connect with relevant members of the Pastoral Care team should they have any questions or concerns about their child at School.
Parents can access resources and readings in relation to:
- Drugs and alcohol
- Social relationships
- Family relationships
- Social media
- Mental health
- Neurodiversity
In addition to this, parents are also able to access information about what to do if their child raises a concern at home, how to navigate the conversation and what sort of information might be helpful to pass on to the School.
If there is specific information that you would like to see included on this page, please let me know.
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics

You will receive an email from the School approximately two weeks prior to your relevant session/s with your unique login details. Once this has been received, you will be required to follow the following steps to login to the booking system:
- Log in to the TIGS Portal
- Click on the Booked Icon
- Click the Senior School Booked Icon
- Enter unique login details from the email
Please note that the system will be accessible from 5.00pm on the day the email is sent until 10.00am on the day of the Parent Teacher Interview evening.
You will be guided through the remaining steps after login. Please note the following points:
- Bookings are made for individual parents/guardians, not for couples. If two parents/guardians wish to attend a single timeslot, one parent/guardian should make the booking, and both parents can attend that timeslot.
- Booked prevents double-booking of teachers or parents/guardians. You will only see timeslots that are available.
- Please ensure that you confirm your bookings by clicking on the green plus ( + ) sign to the right of the time selection window.
- Once you have made your bookings, you can print the details.
- You can log in and change bookings any time up to 10.00am on the day of the interviews.
- If you see this symbol ( ! ) displayed alongside the class name, it means this teacher recommends that you book an interview.
- Other parents may be making bookings while you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a timeslot is displayed to you as available but is then booked by another parent. If you attempt to book this time slot, it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.
If you are unable to attend your evening/s or find suitable timeslots, please contact the School to arrange an alternative time to speak with your child’s teacher/s.
If you have any problems or questions, please contact Mrs Kerrie Sheldon via email at ksheldon@tigs.nsw.edu.au
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics
This term, students will receive their Half Yearly Reports which provide a valuable snapshot of their academic progress so far this year. These reports are designed to offer meaningful insights into each student’s current achievements, highlight areas presenting the greatest opportunities for growth, and reflect their broader contribution to the life of the School.
At Illawarra Grammar, we believe that reporting is not merely a record of past performance, but an important part of the learning process. Reports help students develop self-awareness and agency by identifying their strengths and areas for improvement. For families, they serve as a platform for meaningful conversations about learning, study habits and personal goals. Importantly, they also enable teachers to continue shaping instruction and support based on each student’s evolving learning needs.
Please note that Half Yearly Reports will be accessible at 5.00pm on OLLE on the following dates:
- Year 11 – Friday 23 May
- Year 10 – Friday 30 May
- Year 7 – Friday 6 June
- Year 9 – Friday 13 June
- Year 8 – Friday 20 June
To access reports via OLLE, please follow the steps below:
- Log in to OLLE via the TIGS Portal under the Parent tab.
- In the My Students section, click the three dots next to your child’s name and select Academic Reports.
- Alternatively, click on your child’s name and then select the Academic Reports button.
These reports will frame the conversations at Parent Teacher Interviews. Should you have any further questions about your child’s progress after Parent Teacher Interviews, please do not hesitate to follow up with the relevant classroom teacher.

Student Voice
Drawing closer to the middle of the term, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed about upcoming assessments. Sometimes, it is hard to know where to begin with study or hand-in assessment tasks, and you can find yourself overcome with worry, not sure where the hours you had to study have gone and rushing to finish it the night before the due date.
To ease these assessment anxieties, listed below are number of small things students can do to help make make the workload more manageable, and to help them cruise through the assessment period with minimal stress and maximum results:
- Firstly, ensure that you have a full understanding of the task itself and what it requires of you. This means reading the notification thoroughly as soon as you get it in class. If there is anything you don’t understand, clarify it when you can with your teachers. They aren’t here to trick you or trip you up, they are here to help you achieve your best, so they are open to any questions you may have.
- An important, but often overlooked tip is knowing exactly when your assessment task is due. It may seem like an obvious thing to do but often, it can creep up on you unawares and having it written down in your diary can help you plan study periods around your daily schedule so you won’t be cramming the night before. Remember, you can find the assessment task dates on your class OLLE page and noting these dates at the start of the year, or each term, is a great idea.
- Having assessments written down in a communal space in your home can also allow your family members to offer you that extra bit of support you need during the assessment period. It is easy to feel weighed down when juggling multiple assessments, but sometimes just having other people aware of your schedule can offer that little bit of comfort, support and understanding to get you through.
- While sometimes this feels impossible, taking regular breaks is an important part of succeeding when studying or completing assessments. Working for long periods of time is ineffective as your brain gets tired and overwhelmed, so taking short, regular breaks doing something that relaxes you will actually enhance your ability to remember information and complete tasks effectively.
While stress is sometimes an unavoidable part of the school term, it should always be manageable, so implementing one or all of these simple strategies can help aid you going into the busy assessment period.
On 13 April, the Year 9 and Year 10 Chinese elective students went abroad to China for an unforgettable two-week Cultural Tour. During this cultural visit, we were exposed to many unique ways of life that differed not only from Australia, but also between each major city we visited.
Our first stop was Shanghai, where we visited Wai Tan (The Bund), which featured stunning views of the city’s iconic skyline, historical colonial buildings and vibrant atmosphere along the Huangpu River.
After a couple of days, we travelled to Xi’an and visited a local international school alongside many other Australian schools. We learnt how schools operate differently, as our buddies brought us along to their classes and into their school canteen. In Xi’an, we also dressed in traditional Chinese clothing, which allowed us to experience the culture firsthand and immerse ourselves in the rich history of China.
We then rode the metro to our third city, Chengdu, where the weather reached up to 37 degrees Celsius. Nonetheless, we visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and watched a traditional Chinese changing mask performance (Bian Lian).
Finally, our last city was Beijing, the capital of China. Here, we visited the Summer Palace, which featured beautiful gardens, lakes and palaces. We also climbed a section of the Great Wall of China and tobogganed our way down. Additionally, we explored the Forbidden City and visited a local’s home, where we had lunch and learnt about the history of her home and family.
Overall, the trip broadened our perspectives and left us with lasting memories. Thank you to Mrs Yeh and Mrs Neal for making this trip possible, meaningful and truly memorable.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.
2 Peter 1:5
This term in Senior School chapel, we’re exploring our six school values: Grit, Goodness, Generosity, Gratitude, Gladness and Grace. These aren’t just nice words — they’re the deep character traits that shape the kind of people our students are becoming. Character is like the steering wheel of a powerful engine, the roots beneath towering branches, the foundation under an impressive building. Without it, even the brightest mind can go dangerously off course. But true character doesn’t grow by looking inward and trying harder. As author David Brooks puts it, it grows when we look outward — to something greater. For us, that “something greater” is God. His love, grace and goodness shape us from the inside out.
