Cold Weather
It seems many years since we have experienced a winter as severe as the one that we are currently facing. Furthermore, there seem to be many illnesses in the local community – we have staff and students suffering from influenza, and COVID is still prevalent.
All parents are reminded to keep unwell children at home until they are no longer contagious, and to regularly maintain the vaccinations of their children as appropriate. I have also spoken to many students who do not possess a school jumper and ask all parents to acquire this item of school clothing for their children. For sustainability reasons, we do not overheat our classrooms, so students really need a jumper (as well as the blazer) to keep warm in these colder months.
New Staff Members
One of the challenges of Term III every year is planning for the staffing needs of the next year. And this is certainly the case in 2025.
We have some staffing vacancies for next year. Not only is the growth of the School requiring additional staff, we have a few staff who are retiring or leaving us to undertake further study, relocation or promotional positions. Consequently, we have been advertising for the past two weeks.
It has been a wonderful blessing to read the applications from people who would like to work at Illawarra Grammar. One of the many advantages of developing a reputation as a school that takes teaching and learning seriously is that competent teachers want to work with us. At a time when there is a dearth of teachers across NSW, I am so relieved and grateful that we have such a pool of talent from which to choose our new teachers.
I’ll keep the community posted as new appointments are made, of course.
Strategic Plan
Thank you to those parents who have contacted the School acknowledging the work that has gone into the latest Strategic Plan, Educating for the Future. Since its release, the School’s Leadership Team has spent a considerable amount of time allocating the responsibility for the many strategies and steps involved in achieving the various goals that were listed in the Plan.

This week, we were delighted to welcome Cate James, whose passion for storytelling and illustration captivated our students and sparked their imaginations. Her visit was a highlight, inspiring a love of books and creativity in every classroom.
On Friday, the Junior School came alive with colour and excitement as students dressed up as their favourite book characters. It was a joyful celebration of literature and imagination!
A heartfelt thank you to the P&F Committee, our Year 2 families, and Collins Booksellers Thirroul for their wonderful organisation of the cake stall and book display. Your efforts added a special touch to our week.
We are deeply grateful to our community for their generous donations and enthusiastic support. A special shout-out to our Library team, whose creativity and dedication brought the magic of stories to life and made this week such a memorable success.
The Junior School Music Showcase is fast approaching on Wednesday 3 September (Week 7) at 5.30pm in the IGC, and the children are very excited to share their hard work and passion for music with you. This special evening will feature all our Junior School music ensembles, as well as some soloists, highlighting the creativity, collaboration, and musical excellence of Illawarra Grammar music.
Our upcoming Junior School Dance Showcase is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the talent and creativity of our K-2 Dance Ensemble, Year 3 – 4 Dance Ensemble and Year 5 – 6 Dance Ensemble students. In this new and exciting format, students will perform in small groups, allowing their individual skills and unique styles to shine. This special evening is designed to highlight the performing arts in a fresh and engaging way, giving our community the chance to enjoy the energy and passion our students bring to the stage. We warmly invite all families and friends to join us on Wednesday 10 September (Week 8) at 5.30pm in the IGC to enjoy an inspiring night of dance.
Please ensure that all your child’s items are labelled with their first and last name clearly. Also ensure that second-hand items have been clearly labelled. We have a growing collection of unlabelled items including sport jackets, blazers, some old swimming gear and hats. We have made many attempts to return these to students but, without labels, this is very difficult. Unlabelled items will be sent to our second-hand uniform shop if they are not claimed within two weeks. A reminder to also ensure that your child has a labelled raincoat packed in their school bag at all times.

Senior School News
Head of Senior School
With their Year 12 Trial examinations drawing to a close this week, our Year 12 students will be in no doubt that the end of their time at Illawarra Grammar is drawing near. As they complete their Year 12 studies over the coming weeks, thoughts will increasingly turn to their final examinations and ATAR.
On 8 September, a representative from UAC will be directly addressing our Year 12 students in their fortnightly Careers session with the aim of providing complete clarity as to what happens between students sitting their HSC examinations and receiving an offer from their universities of choice. There will be an opportunity for students to ask questions to ensure they feel confident about the road ahead.
The Sydney Morning Herald recently published an article in which Mr Paul Martin (CEO, NESA) and Dr Helen TAM (UAC) discussed a range of persistent myths surrounding matters relating to moderation, scaling and the ATAR. I commend the article to all senior students, their parents and carers.
This week at Assembly, interested students were asked to consider becoming involved in the Raise Our Voice initiative. The initiative involves students submitting a 200-word response to the question “What steps should the government take today to build a better tomorrow for young Australians?” During Youth Voice in Parliament week, 27 – 30 October, federal MPs will read a response written by a young person from their state, territory or electorate. A workshop was held earlier this week to assist interested students and further information can be located on the Senior School Cocurricular page under the Civics and Citizenship tile.
Last week, I addressed Year 10 students to outline expectations for their formal which takes place at the end of this term. I have also written to our Year 10 families to provide further details of the event which will take place on the evening of Thursday 25 September at The Grange, Kembla Grange. If you have a son/daughter in Year 10 and haven’t yet responded, please use the link in my email to provide important information about dietary requirements and the safe dismissal for your son/daughter.
Please note the last day of Term III for Year 10 only, is Thursday 25 September.
During Weeks 7 and 8, from Monday 1 September to Friday 12 September, Year 11 students will sit their Preliminary Examinations.
These assessment tasks are the culmination of Year 11 studies; the results will inform teachers in determining students’ final grades and provide useful feedback to students ahead of their commencement of HSC courses in Term IV.
Students have been issued examination timetables and directed to discuss their study planners and timetables with their mentors. Students are only expected to be on campus for their scheduled examinations during the exam weeks but they are welcome to sign in at the Goodhew Library at any other time during school hours and on Saturdays between 9.00am and 2.00pm.
We wish Year 11 students all the best as they prepare for their examinations.
Dr Michael Molkentin – Director of Studies
The Illawarra Grammar School is one of only a handful of schools in Australia accredited by Cambridge University to offer IGCSE courses and the only Cambridge International School in the Illawarra region. These academically rigorous courses give our most capable and motivated students the opportunity to challenge themselves and to gain skills and knowledge in Years 9 and 10 that will equip them to excel in their HSC studies.
We are pleased that there has been strong interest from Year 8 students regarding the Cambridge International Science and Global Perspectives courses in 2026-2027.
Staff are currently reviewing student applications and classes will be announced in Term 4, following the Yearly Examinations.
There are still openings for further applications to Global Perspectives. Please contact me if you would like to apply to enter your child into this course. You may want to consider that:
- Studying both IGCSE Science and Global Perspectives is possible; there is no disadvantage to doing so.
- Though paired with Geography in the timetable, Global Perspectives is not a Geography or, indeed, Humanities/Social Sciences course. Students develop critical thinking and research skills through engaging with global issues that are broadly cross-disciplinary, including, for example: biodiversity and ecosystem loss, trade, law and criminality, energy, human rights, and belief systems.
We are excited to be able to offer Cambridge International courses to Illawarra Grammar students and are looking at expanding the IGCSE courses on offer to Stage 5 students in the future.
Our annual showcase of Year 12 HSC Major Works will take place on Thursday 28 August, commencing officially at 5.00pm. Members of the Illawarra Grammar community are warmly invited to join us in celebrating the exceptional achievements of our students across English Extension 2, Society and Culture, Visual Arts, Drama, Music, Industrial Technology, and Design and Technology.
Exhibition Schedule:
- 4.00pm Exhibition opens
- General viewing of major works on display for English Extension 2, Society and Culture, Visual Arts, Industrial Technology, Music, Drama and Design and Technology
- 5.00pm Official opening with guest speaker, Simon Cunich (Class of 2003)
- 5.15pm Drama performances
- 6.15pm Music performances
- 7.15pm Evening concludes.
We encourage parents, families and friends to attend this celebration of creativity, innovation and dedication, and to experience firsthand the calibre of work produced by our Year 12 students.
We are excited to announce our first ever Ensembles Night, taking place on Thursday 18 September at 5.30pm in the IGC.
This special evening will showcase the talent and dedication of our student musicians, with performances from the:
- Jazz Ensemble
- Chamber Group
- Senior Strings
- Senior Choir
- Senior Orchestra
The event is free to attend, and we warmly invite our community to come along and enjoy an inspiring night of music.
The Year 8 Camp Information Evening will take place on Monday 25 August, commencing at 5.30pm in the Library. Parents and Year 8 students are encouraged to attend to hear more about this year’s camp, to learn about gear requirements and to ask any questions.
The P&F will host the inaugural Senior School Father’s Day Breakfast on Thursday 4 September from 7.00am – 8.00am. All details below. Buy tickets here.

Amelia Murray – Year 9
At Illawarra Grammar, sport is an important part of day to day life. Volleyball is a sport that is rapidly growing in popularity with both competitive and recreational fixtures and practices attracting students of different ages.
Volleyball training, hosted by Mrs Cassidy on Tuesday afternoons from 3.15pm to 4.15pm, has been offered to accommodate the growing number of students interested in the sport. Under the guidance of experienced players and teachers, students develop their skills and confidence in a relaxed and enjoyable environment.
Each session begins with the basic skills of volleyball: digging, serving, setting and spiking. In pairs or groups, the first 15 minutes are dedicated to correct technique before moving to court play. For the remainder of the session, students practise their gameplay, often divided by beginner and experienced levels to ensure everyone has the opportunity to play at their own pace.
The Senior Boys lunchtime training for the Gala Day also attracted attention from younger players, many of whom are eager to learn the game in hopes of representing the School in the future.
In Term II, two Senior teams represented The Illawarra Grammar School at the Volleyball Gala Day in Minto. Both teams were successful, winning all their matches and progressing to the finals. The Senior Girls team played strongly in the final, narrowly missing victory and finishing second overall. The Senior Boys team won the day, defeating the final opponent in two sets and remaining undefeated. The Gala Day was an excellent opportunity for players to put their skills into practice in a competitive environment.
This competition inspired many students who, seeing the success and enjoyment of their peers, chose to join the growing volleyball community at TIGS. Any students interested in participating in volleyball with Mrs Cassidy are welcome to attend Tuesday afternoon training.

Food Technology will be offered at Illawarra Grammar in 2026 for the first time allowing students to explore nutrition, food packaging and its impact, alongside practical lessons using kitchen equipment to prepare healthy meals.
Choosing electives is an exciting step for Year 8 students as they begin shaping their future pathways. The range of subjects available at Illawarra Grammar encourages students to discover new interests, strengthen existing skills and prepare for the opportunities ahead in Senior School and beyond.
Sienna Bohm – Year 10
On 7 June, two Illawarra Grammar Year 10 teams had the privilege of speaking at the New South Wales State Parliament for the annual Rotary Club Model United Nations Assembly. The event aims to replicate a real United Nations General Assembly debate.
Teams were given resolutions weeks prior to the competition and dedicated countless hours to researching their country’s stance, identifying allies and adversaries and perfecting their cultural dress for the day.
Our two teams represented very different nations. James Dalton, Aubrey Koll and Zahra Freeman represented Germany, while Ashley Parker, Saskia Esslinger, Pearl Bramble and I represented Sierra Leone.
We debated resolutions on nuclear proliferation in the Middle East, the glorification of neo-Nazism and global food security.
As the Chair of the Assembly noted, one of the greatest challenges of Model United Nations is representing views that may not reflect your own. This highlights that one of the most valuable skills developed through the process is the ability to accept and understand other nations’ world views. This strengthens understanding of global politics and improves the ability to actively listen to others.
Our Germany team won the award for Best Cultural Dress, the second consecutive year that Illawarra Grammar has received this honour.
For the current Year 9 students who will have the opportunity to compete next year, I encourage you to seize the chance and make the most of the guidance and support you will receive. Strive to understand your assigned country deeply and, most importantly, listen carefully to the stances and viewpoints of other nations on the day. By doing so, you will gain knowledge of the world around you and learn to appreciate new perspectives.
We would like to thank Mrs das Neves and Grace Russo (Year 11) for their support and guidance throughout the process.

Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
James 2:17
In Junior School Chapel this term, our series Faith in Action has reminded us that true trust in God doesn’t stay hidden in our hearts, it always shows itself in how we live. As James writes, ‘Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead’ (James 2:17). Each week, we’ve explored a different Bible story where ordinary people put their faith into action: Abraham trusted without a map, Joseph forgave his brothers, Moses found courage before Pharaoh, Esther risked everything for others, Ruth stayed loyal in friendship and more. The bottom line is: faith isn’t just believing in God; it’s living boldly because we trust the Creator of heaven and earth.
