We also welcome back:

Additionally, I am pleased to announce the appointment of two new Heads of Department in our Senior School, in newly formed departments:

- Mr Todd Southcombe – Head of Humanities.
Emma McKeon (Class of 2012)
We are proud to share that the greatest Australian Olympian of all time, Emma McKeon, is a past student of Illawarra Grammar. As a school community, I am sure we have all been collectively cheering for Emma. Her extraordinary talent, hard work and determination have been an inspiration for our students. You may like to watch this video that we sent to Emma McKeon and her family.
Over the Holidays
The non-term time at Illawarra Grammar has been a busy time indeed. Work on the C Building (the Senior School Reception) has been hectic, but the result is excellent. Students will now have easier access to the senior staff, and the resulting relocation of the Finance team into the building means that we have claimed an additional classroom space.
An enthusiastic group of Year 11 students also visited and served at the Nganambala Indigenous community in the Northern Territory over the holidays. This is an annual trip which is highly valued by our students and much appreciated by the community.
We are also excited to announce the launch of our new website. Mrs Emma Deacon, our Director of Marketing, and her team have been working on this project for the past few months. We are thrilled with the result, and hope that our families find it easy to navigate.
Artificial Intelligence
Like most organisations, the senior staff at Illawarra Grammar have been spending some professional development time discussing the impact of artificial intelligence on the teaching, learning and administration of our School.

Junior School News
Head of Junior School
Welcome to Term III! We launched into our program with enthusiasm and excitement. To our new families and students, a special warm welcome! Our dedicated staff and supportive community are here to ensure a smooth transition and provide any assistance you may need. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions or require further information. Thank you for ensuring that our students are wearing their correct winter uniform, and are well presented with correct hair and jewellery requirements.
As we celebrate the spirit of the Olympics, and our own Emma McKeon, we are inspired by all the incredible athletes who strive for their personal best, pushing boundaries and achieving greatness. This spirit has extended into our Junior School classrooms where students have been inspired by the efforts and determination of our Australian athletes and ‘Personal Best’ has become a natural and important focus.
What Is a Personal Best?
‘A personal best is about doing your very best in everything you do—whether it’s in learning, playing, or helping others. Just like Olympic athletes train hard and give their all to improve their performances, our students are encouraged to give their best efforts and embrace challenges with enthusiasm’.
Our Year 6 Student Captains spent time creating messages of inspiration and examples of what Personal Best looks like across the School. Please keep an eye out for these posters.
We are delighted to share that our Kindy Play Lawn has a beautiful new addition. We have a new play structure that has been installed over the school holidays. It has been designed to stimulate imagination, play and social interaction. Our students are enjoying the new equipment, excitedly heading out to the playground at break times. We want to thank our Parents and Friends Association for their generous donation towards this special project.
This week Kindergarten celebrated 100 days of being at school. It is a joy to see the growth and development of our young learners. Kindergarten spent the day engaged in many fun activities to mark the occasion. Congratulations to our Kindergarten students for reaching this special milestone.
We have an exciting number of events planned for this term. These events not only enhance the educational experience but also provide opportunities for students, families, and staff to come together as a community. Please refer to your child’s grade letter for important dates and times. We look forward to your attendance at our Student Led Conferences next week.
For updates on school events, important announcements, and student achievements, please check the newsletter, your child’s OLLE grade page, and their diary for individual communication. We value open communication and encourage parents to engage with our school community.
Year 2 enjoyed a day in the sun exploring Audley Valley where they uncovered evidence of the past. The students learned about the Dharawal people and how the area had been used for thousands of years for food, water, medicine, and tools. They reenacted the opening ceremony of the Royal National Park and discovered how the Audley Dancing Hall served as a community gathering place. Year 2 also saw many fascinating historical artifacts, which we will be investigating further, along with more of the area’s history, in class. A special thank you to the Year 2 teachers for coordinating such a fabulous day.

Certain Latin phrases in common parlance carry significant weight: ‘De Virtute in Virtutem’ will be recognisable as our School motto, Carpe diem appears in written and dramatic works dating back to the first century BC, and phrases like e.g. (exempli gratia), status quo, vice versa, and mea culpa are so common we often forget their ancient origins.
Many of us have enjoyed the Olympics this week. Most notably we celebrate the achievements of our very own Emma McKeon (Class of 2012), now Australia’s greatest Olympian. The Latin phrase Citius, Altius, Fortius (‘Swifter, Higher, Stronger’) was adopted by the International Olympic Committee in 1894 to embody the Olympic spirit. The phrase was taken up by IOC after the Headmaster of Arcueil College in Paris used it while addressing his students. The pursuit of personal goals, timely feedback, achieving personal bests, and striving for excellence are traits shared by both top athletes and committed learners alike.
During Term III, our Year 11 and 12 students will be undertaking important Trial and Preliminary examinations that will prepare them for the examinations they will face at the end of their HSC courses. In the final week of term, we will be taking Year 12 students for a beautiful cruise around Sydney Harbour where we hope lasting memories will be formed, ahead of their Graduation and Valete Dinner. In Week 8, our Year 10s will be facing a rather different set of challenges as they attend their final year camp, at Kosciuszko National Park. Over the coming weeks, students in Year 10 and Year 11 will submit applications and be selected to represent the School as Student Leaders from the start of next term. These roles hold significant weight and personify the values, character and commitment of our wonderful School.
The Great Race will take place in Week 7 (29 November), Term IV and in keeping with previous years, our House Captains will take a central role in running the event and preparing students of all ages to personify the House spirit of committed, friendly (but fierce) competition as they battle it out in the last House event of the year, to see who will take the Shell Shield. Semper ad meliora!
In Week 3, Year 7s will hear more about the elective subjects that they can choose to study in Year 8. Students will have a special Year Meeting on Monday 5 August where the process for selection will be explained to them. During this meeting, they will be provided with a course booklet providing some information about each of the courses that should help them to reach their decisions. A digital copy of this document will be available to students and families on the Year 7 OLLE page from the start of next week. Please note, the deadline for students to submit their selections is Friday 9 August.
Mr Chris Breheny – Head of Academics
I would like to remind all students and parents to please refresh your understanding of our assessment, academic integrity, and homework policies. These policies are accessible to parents and students once logged into OLLE by clicking on the Senior School Policies and Agreements tile on the Senior School OLLE homepage.
In taking responsibility for the submission of tasks and completion of set work, it is important that students are aware of the following:
- Tasks not submitted in the appropriate manner or place specified will be classified as a ‘non-submission’ of assessment and result in a zero (0) being recorded for that task.
- Failure to submit a task before the due date and time will result in a zero (0) being recorded for that task.
- Technology issues (such as computers not working, work not saving, losing work, or inability to print work) do not constitute exceptional circumstances and therefore will not be considered sufficient reason for the work to be handed in late.
- Hand-in tasks must be submitted before 8.40am on the due date.
- Assessment tasks which are missed for reasons other than illness, misadventure, elite sporting or performing commitments, significant cultural or religious occasions, or official school business will result in a zero (0) being recorded for that task.
- If a Year 11 or Year 12 student is unable to complete or submit an assessment task on or before the due date/time, they are required to complete an online Illness and Misadventure Form found on the students’ Year Group OLLE page.
- If a Year 7 – 10 student is unable to complete or submit an assessment task on or before the due date/time, they are required to email the appropriate Head of Department explaining the circumstance and provide supporting documentation (e.g. doctor’s certificate).
- In instances where a student is shown to have cheated or gained an unfair advantage in an assessment task, a zero (0) will be recorded for that task.
- It is an expectation that students hand in homework to a suitable standard, in line with the deadline communicated by their teacher. Students failing to meet their deadlines (without prior approval from their teacher or satisfactory reasons as to why they were unable to do so) or submitting sub-standard work should expect to be issued consequences such as staying in at lunchtime or receiving infringements.
Please note that this is a condensed list of expectations from our academic policies. Students are responsible for reading, understanding, and adhering to the entirety of the School’s assessment, academic integrity, attendance and homework policies.
We appreciate your willingness to work in partnership with the School as we seek to ensure the highest standard of academic integrity and fairness and maximise student learning.
Mr Adrian Deck – Head of Sports
Our Senior School Athletics Carnival was held at the end of last term at Kerryn McCann Athletics Centre.
The conditions were perfect for Athletics, with beautiful blue skies and a gentle southerly breeze. Our students made the most of this opportunity, throwing themselves into as many events as they could, in an effort to win points for their House. There were some outstanding individual performances on the day, with nine records being broken by five of our top athletes.
A big congratulations to Kogara for winning the House competition for the second year in a row.
Finally, a big thanks to the teachers, House Captains and Wollongong City Little Athletics for their help in making the carnival such a successful day.

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
1 Corinthians 13:13
If we had to sum up the implications of our School’s Christian foundations in one word, it would be ‘love’. From a Christian point-of-view, ‘God is love’ (1 John 4) and so we come from love, we’re destined for love and – in the meantime – we’re called to love. This is expressed in our commitment to the students and their wellbeing; to our professional teaching standards; to being the best educational institution we can be; and in a myriad of other ways.
