Welcome

We extend a very warm welcome to those families who are joining The Illawarra Grammar School community this term. I hope you find the School to be a happy and joyous place of learning for your child/ren as well as an informative and supportive environment for your families.

We also welcome the new teaching staff who have joined us this term:

  • Miss Jennifer Arapakis – Science Department
  • Mr Mark Langley – Head of Social Sciences.

This term, Mrs Woolnough moves into her new role as Coordinator of Future Readiness. Focusing on our senior students in Years 10-12, this role is designed to ensure that our students leave school with the knowledge and skills necessary for life after school, including information such as financial literacy (including the management of university charges and the acquisition of a tax file number), political awareness (e.g. how to register to vote), and health awareness (e.g. eligibility for a Medicare card).

We have a number of Senior School staff who are taking short periods of leave – such as Long Service Leave, parental leave or personal leave – in Term IV. Fortunately, we have enough competent staff to cover these short absences.

Holiday Events

As always, this school holiday period was a busy time for the School. Many Year 12 students availed themselves of the opportunity for revision lessons prior to the commencement of their HSC examinations; students took part in Bronze and Silver expeditions for their Duke of Edinburgh Awards; and many of our French students visited France for 16 days of cultural and language immersion.

Such holidays events can only happen because of the willingness of the staff at the School to be involved. We are certainly blessed with generous and competent staff at Illawarra Grammar.

Building Update

Much building activity happened over the holidays as well. The Junior School staff room was refurbished, and work commenced on the new state-of-the-art kitchen facility in the Senior School for our Food Technology and Hospitality students.

Arguably, the highlight of the holidays was the arrival of the timber for our Hoskins Building. All the way from a sustainable plantation in Austria, the cross-laminated timber travelled across the seas for several weeks before landing at Botany. It was a joy to see the first truck arriving at the School with its precious cargo.

The work on the building since the arrival of the timber has been extraordinary. Already, we can clearly see the placement of the Junior School classrooms, the Junior School Library and the STEM Lab. The frame for the top storey should be complete in the coming weeks.

I encourage all families to consider contributing to this project by donating to the TIGS Foundation’s “Take A Seat” campaign. These named seats will be a tangible legacy to the School for the benefit of its current and future students. A donation form can be found here.

For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever!

Romans 11:36

This term in Senior School Chapel, the talk series title is The Air We Breathe, inspired by Glen Scrivener book of the same name. He argues that many of the values we assume to be universal – compassion, equality, freedom and progress – are, in fact, the fruit of Christianity’s deep influence on our culture. Each week, we’ll trace these ideals back to their source, exploring how Christian faith has shaped Western history, and what happens when we try to keep the kingdom without its King.
