Swimming Carnivals and Information Evenings

Thank you to the parents and grandparents (two of whom were visiting from overseas) who braved the wet conditions on Monday to attend the Senior School swimming carnival. Despite the weather, it was a wonderful day and a lovely opportunity to catch up with other parents and staff.

We look forward to a happy day of swimming for our Junior School students today.

Thank you, too, to the many parents who attended the Junior School Information Evenings and the Year 7 Camp Information Evening. I hope you found these sessions to be helpful.

Explicit Teaching

Educators in NSW are well aware of the emphasis that is currently being placed on explicit teaching in schools across Australia but particularly in NSW and the ACT.

Over the last two years, the Head of Academics in the Senior School, Mr Chris Breheny, and other senior staff have been investigating the science of learning, including the importance of retrieval and cognitive load theory. As a result, we are convinced that explicit teaching is the best approach to teaching and learning at a school that takes education seriously.

As a result, we have started to phase in the principles of Explicit Teaching in the Senior School. The English Department, under the leadership of the Head of Department, Mr Tim Murray, has led the way, and we attribute this approach of explicit teaching by our competent and hard-working English staff for much of our success in HSC English last year.

Many parents have commented most favourably on the small steps that have been taken to support explicit teaching. Managing the classroom layout to ensure every student gets a chance to sit under the watchful eye of the teacher, using specific revision questions at the start of the lesson, and reducing the opportunity for distraction from the laptop are three such measures.

Mastering the various aspects of explicit teaching will continue to be the focus of the professional development for teaching staff in the Senior School in 2026.

Academic Mentoring Commences

It has been the practice at Illawarra Grammar for members of the senior staff to conduct individual academic mentoring sessions with Year 12 students. These sessions are commencing this week with our current Year 12 cohort, to help students identify the areas that need their attention and for the staff to give guidance about revision routines and balance.

Student Successes Outside School

One of the features of the Illawarra is the connection that many families have with the community. As a result, many of our students are involved in activities such as sport, Church youth groups and the performing arts.

While we cannot formally recognise the success of students in activities outside the School, we are pleased to make informal mention of these successes, where possible, on our social media platforms, in Assemblies or in class.

So, if your son or daughter experiences success in an activity outside the School, please let us know by completing this form or emailing StudentSuccesses@tigs.nsw.edu.au. We would love to acknowledge these achievements if appropriate.

The New Kitchen

It is with much excitement that we watch the new kitchen near completion. Food Technology and Hospitality classes will move into this wonderful new space on Monday 2 March 2026.

The School Council has decided to name this commercial kitchen in honour of Mr Roger Summerill OAM.

Mr Summerill served as Chair of the Illawarra Grammar School Council from 2000 to 2019, providing strategic leadership during a period of significant growth and development at the School. His tenure saw the introduction of new facilities and programs that strengthened the School’s academic and cocurricular offerings. Following his Council role, Mr Summerill continued his contribution as Chair of TIGS Foundation until 2025, supporting initiatives that enhanced resources and opportunities for students.

As a parent and grandparent of alumni, Mr Summerill maintained a strong personal connection to the school community. The Summerill Kitchen acknowledges his leadership and enduring contribution to the life of the Illawarra Grammar.

Two Key Dates

Two important events are approaching and I would like to draw to your attention to them.

The Opening of the Summerill Kitchen and the Hoskins Building will take place on Friday 15 May. The invitation will be included in the newsletters later in the term; personalised invitations will be sent to donors who have purchased a seat in our Take A Seat capital appeal. (There is still the opportunity to purchase a seat – please see below in the General News section of this newsletter).

The Opening looks like taking many different forms with special guests and alumni. More information will be given once details are finalised.

There will be a Farewell Assembly for Ms Geneva Clayton on Thursday 26 March. This will commence at 1.30 pm. At the conclusion of the Assembly, the students will return to class while parents and guests enjoy afternoon tea.

If you are interested in attending, please see the invitation in the Junior School section of this newsletter. Please RSVP to reserve a seat, as seating may be limited.

Senior School News

Mr Paul Vickers
Head of Senior School

This week’s Swimming Carnival was far more than a day of races, ribbons and house chants. It offered a clear view of our school culture, marked by support, encouragement and a strong sense of belonging. I was struck by the positive culture of students cheering for every swimmer and the environment where participation felt safe, valued and shared.

The day also highlighted the grit students show when facing challenges. Many pushed through nerves, aimed for personal bests or simply committed to completing their lap. Their determination, strengthened by the encouragement around them was impressive.

If this event is a litmus test for our culture, the result is unmistakable. We are a community that celebrates effort, fosters belonging and takes pride in lifting one another up.

Psalm 19:1

This term, our Junior School memory verse is Psalm 19:1. Creation has a way of speaking, even without words. I felt this most vividly in January, watching the aurora over the south coast: blues and purples swirling in the most breathtaking shades. Echoing the Psalm 19, one theologian writes, “The beauty of the world is a reflection of the beauty of its Creator.” When moments like this come, it’s always worth pausing to listen to the voice of creation and to thank the One who made it all.
