Year 6 Canberra excursion

May 5, 2023
Xavier Knight and Elise Cordaro - Year 6 students

“Students from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.”

On April 27, Year 6 was lucky enough to visit the capital of Australia. It was an experience that all students have learned from and will never forget.

Going to Canberra expanded our knowledge of the Australian Government. We were able to explore the history of Australia’s Government and show responsibility for the way we engaged in our learning, especially at important sites like the Australian War Memorial and New Parliament House. Year 6 appreciated learning about the voting system, as we, one day, will have to vote.

We also enjoyed exploring different sports and were inspired at the AIS (Australian Institution of Sport) and who knows, maybe one of us will attend in the future. At Questacon we enjoyed the hands-on experience to explore science.

When we visited the War Memorial, we were able to gain more perspective over what happened in these tragic wars. Students learned about the qualities Australian soldiers showed during wars and reflected upon them. Year 6 also listening to personal stories of soldiers who fought in the wars.

We have grown as learners due to this fantastic experience. We would like to thank our teachers Mrs Stanis, Ms Pather, Mr Agnew, Mr Yeo, Mr Robinson and Mrs Hutchins for ensuring we had a wonderful time, and a particular thank you to Mrs Stanis and Mrs Kenter for all of the organisation leading up to the event to ensure that it we had a brilliant time and created lifelong memories.
