The Joy In Learning – A Deep Satisfaction

June 18, 2021
Head of Junior School - Ms Geneva Clayton

As we conclude this very busy semester, we look back, with a sense of pride and joy at the progress we have made. Reflecting on individual student growth through journals and reports, collaborating with teachers, reviewing and refining programmes of learning and finalising plans for the year ahead, we are incredibly proud of the achievements of our students and staff.

This term we introduced the idea of a ‘Celebration of Learning’ for each grade. These were designed to engage our students in the process of sharing their learning with their parents, friends and loved ones. The opportunity to do this allowed for the incredibly important part of the learning process where learning is shared, demonstrating understanding through either the application of skills and knowledge to achieve a goal or complete a task, or simply the opportunity to discuss and share learning, analysing and synthesizing this in the process, allowing thoughts to be confirmed or questioned.

Some highlights included; Year 3 students invited parents to co-construct a hothouse and watering device based on the collaborative group idea. Year 4 students delighted visitors with a visit to an arcade that showcased their brilliant knowledge about physics and forces. Kindergarten proudly shared their presentation (and aerobics) skills in their very first assembly, followed by a Celebration of Learning that shared the magnificent learning that has taken place over the past 6 months.

These invaluable experiences gave every child the opportunity to share their learning in authentic, meaningful and memorable ways. The simple joy in the faces of students, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and our staff confirmed that the experience was a huge success.

‘Feedback is most powerful when it is from student to adult’ John Hattie. We hope that you enjoyed the Celebrations of Learning and look forward to more visits shortly.

Year 6 Captains Update

Our Year 6 Captains have been busy speaking at our assemblies, meeting weekly and being real advocates for our Junior School students. Every week we meet to explore the student question/suggestion box.
