Our collective success is illustrated by TIGS’ outstanding record with typically 85 to 90% of our students offered university placement, the majority before they sit their exams at the end of Year 12.

We are proud to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) teaching framework in the Junior School. With its focus on developing the whole child with skills for lifelong learning, the IB helps your child become an independent thinker – while having the support of world-class academics and teachers. An IB education transforms your child as they learn, through dynamic cycles of inquiry, action and reflection. Your child will be encouraged to try different approaches to learning and to take responsibility for their own educational progress as they explore how knowledge itself is constructed. In this way, the IB fosters a broad range of human capacities and responsibilities that go beyond intellectual development and academic success.

Key to the IB approach is an individualised style of learning, which recognises that every student learns in their own way and from their own perspective. We believe the best results are achieved through a flexible and individually-driven framework.

Preparatory to Year 6

From Preparatory through to Year 6, your child will be involved in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) where they will begin to develop a solid foundation of learning, independence and building relationships with other students. The PYP provides students with a rigorous and challenging framework that helps students develop their skills, knowledge and attitudes they need to excel not only in their studies but also in their personal growth. Taking action is an integral part of the curriculum with our goal to develop students who will grow into adults who are able to make positive differences in the world. To achieve this, our teacher explicitly support and guide each student with rich Units of Inquiry and scaffolded learning experiences that develop thinking, social, communication, research and self-management skills.

Year 7 to Year 10

Year 7 to Year 10 is a particularly critical phase of learning, with a focus on high levels of student engagement and intellectual development. It is a time in which students are equipped with the foundations that will allow them to become curious, adaptable, reflective lifelong learners with the values and commitment to serving others that comes from a Christian education. Students are active participants in their learning, acquiring the critical knowledge, skills and understanding to enable them to flourish in Year 11 and Year 12 as well as the world that awaits them beyond. Our aim is to offer a personalised, high quality curriculum that will develop balanced and well-rounded students who have all they need to flourish in wherever their passions, giftings or abilities take them.

Year 11 to Year 12

The Higher School Certificate (HSC) is undertaken by students in Year 11 and Year 12. The programme of study allows your child to specialise in one area or undertake a broad pattern of study. The only mandatory subject is English and students have the flexibility to weight their programme towards their areas of strength and their intended career direction. Through their senior studies at The Illawarra Grammar School we aim to equip each student with the knowledge, skills and values to contribute positively to the ever changing world.
