Swimming Carnivals and Information Evenings
Thank you to the parents and grandparents (two of whom were visiting from overseas) who braved the wet conditions on Monday to attend the Senior School swimming carnival. Despite the weather, it was a wonderful day and a lovely opportunity to catch up with other parents and staff.
We look forward to a happy day of swimming for our Junior School students today.
Thank you, too, to the many parents who attended the Junior School Information Evenings and the Year 7 Camp Information Evening. I hope you found these sessions to be helpful.
Explicit Teaching
Educators in NSW are well aware of the emphasis that is currently being placed on explicit teaching in schools across Australia but particularly in NSW and the ACT.
Over the last two years, the Head of Academics in the Senior School, Mr Chris Breheny, and other senior staff have been investigating the science of learning, including the importance of retrieval and cognitive load theory. As a result, we are convinced that explicit teaching is the best approach to teaching and learning at a school that takes education seriously.
As a result, we have started to phase in the principles of Explicit Teaching in the Senior School. The English Department, under the leadership of the Head of Department, Mr Tim Murray, has led the way, and we attribute this approach of explicit teaching by our competent and hard-working English staff for much of our success in HSC English last year.
Many parents have commented most favourably on the small steps that have been taken to support explicit teaching. Managing the classroom layout to ensure every student gets a chance to sit under the watchful eye of the teacher, using specific revision questions at the start of the lesson, and reducing the opportunity for distraction from the laptop are three such measures.
Mastering the various aspects of explicit teaching will continue to be the focus of the professional development for teaching staff in the Senior School in 2026.
Academic Mentoring Commences
It has been the practice at Illawarra Grammar for members of the senior staff to conduct individual academic mentoring sessions with Year 12 students. These sessions are commencing this week with our current Year 12 cohort, to help students identify the areas that need their attention and for the staff to give guidance about revision routines and balance.
Student Successes Outside School
One of the features of the Illawarra is the connection that many families have with the community. As a result, many of our students are involved in activities such as sport, Church youth groups and the performing arts.
While we cannot formally recognise the success of students in activities outside the School, we are pleased to make informal mention of these successes, where possible, on our social media platforms, in Assemblies or in class.
So, if your son or daughter experiences success in an activity outside the School, please let us know by completing this form or emailing StudentSuccesses@tigs.nsw.edu.au. We would love to acknowledge these achievements if appropriate.
The New Kitchen
It is with much excitement that we watch the new kitchen near completion. Food Technology and Hospitality classes will move into this wonderful new space on Monday 2 March 2026.
The School Council has decided to name this commercial kitchen in honour of Mr Roger Summerill OAM.
Mr Summerill served as Chair of the Illawarra Grammar School Council from 2000 to 2019, providing strategic leadership during a period of significant growth and development at the School. His tenure saw the introduction of new facilities and programs that strengthened the School’s academic and cocurricular offerings. Following his Council role, Mr Summerill continued his contribution as Chair of TIGS Foundation until 2025, supporting initiatives that enhanced resources and opportunities for students.
As a parent and grandparent of alumni, Mr Summerill maintained a strong personal connection to the school community. The Summerill Kitchen acknowledges his leadership and enduring contribution to the life of the Illawarra Grammar.
Two Key Dates
Two important events are approaching and I would like to draw to your attention to them.
The Opening of the Summerill Kitchen and the Hoskins Building will take place on Friday 15 May. The invitation will be included in the newsletters later in the term; personalised invitations will be sent to donors who have purchased a seat in our Take A Seat capital appeal. (There is still the opportunity to purchase a seat – please see below in the General News section of this newsletter).
The Opening looks like taking many different forms with special guests and alumni. More information will be given once details are finalised.
There will be a Farewell Assembly for Ms Geneva Clayton on Thursday 26 March. This will commence at 1.30 pm. At the conclusion of the Assembly, the students will return to class while parents and guests enjoy afternoon tea.
If you are interested in attending, please see the invitation in the Junior School section of this newsletter. Please RSVP to reserve a seat, as seating may be limited.

Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students participate in assessments for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
In 2026, NAPLAN tests at The Illawarra Grammar School will take place from Wednesday 11 March to Tuesday 17 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our School’s learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills that your child is already learning in class. In the Junior School, students will participate in NAPLAN online on the following dates:
Week 7
- Wednesday 11 March: Writing 9.00am
- Thursday 12 March: Reading 9.00am
Week 8
- Monday 16 March: Conventions of Language 9.00am
- Tuesday 17 March: Numeracy 9.00am
Catch‑up sessions will be available for students who are absent, up until Monday 23 March.
All students in Years 3 and 5 will be provided with a device for testing. Please ensure your child brings corded headphones with either a USB or AUX connection.
Junior School parents and carers of Years 3 and 5 students are invited to attend a NAPLAN Information Session on Thursday 26 February from 4.00pm-4.30pm in the 3C classroom. This session will outline the adaptive nature of NAPLAN and how results are interpreted and used.
Families may also explore the public demonstration site to view sample questions and tools used in the online tests. Students have already begun preparing in class to ensure they are confident and familiar with the platform.
Further information is available on the NESA website.
Support is available for students with existing classroom adjustments. Mrs Avery, Academic Support Coordinator, will contact families where relevant.
Mrs Kylie Dribbus – Junior School Sports Coordinator
Netball

Swimming
Our Thursday morning Swim Squad at McKeon’s for students in Years 3-6 still has places available. Learn more and register here.
Mountain Biking
If your child is a Mountain Biker, families are invited to enter their child to compete at the 2026 Australian Interschools MTB Championships at Thredbo on Monday 2 – Friday 6 March. Please note that events for Years 3-8 will be held from Monday 2 March to Wednesday 4 March, and events for Years 9-12 will be held from Wednesday 4 March to Friday 6 March. Please note that parents are required to complete all entries for their children here. Once you have completed the entry, please complete this form , so that the School is aware of your entry.
To help maintain a safe and efficient carline for our community, we would like to remind all parents and carers to follow the guidelines below:
- Please remain in your vehicle while in the carline. Do not exit your car to collect your child, as this disrupts traffic flow and compromises safety of students and staff
- Parents of students in Years 3 and above must not enter the carpark before 3.10pm. Arriving early causes congestion and affects the safety and movement of younger students
- On-site parking is extremely limited. There is no parking available on campus for events, so please plan ahead and make use of surrounding street parking
- Lanes must remain clear at all times. Vehicles should never be parked in areas that block access or impede the movement of other cars.
Thank you for your cooperation and for supporting a safe and respectful environment for all members of our school community.
School photographs will take place on Monday 23 February. All students are required to wear full school uniform on this day. Information regarding photo orders was mailed home in January. If you have not yet placed an order, you may do so by visiting www.advancedlife.com.au and entering the school code GJL T18 HJ8.
Senior School News
Head of Senior School
This week’s Swimming Carnival was far more than a day of races, ribbons and house chants. It offered a clear view of our school culture, marked by support, encouragement and a strong sense of belonging. I was struck by the positive culture of students cheering for every swimmer and the environment where participation felt safe, valued and shared.
The day also highlighted the grit students show when facing challenges. Many pushed through nerves, aimed for personal bests or simply committed to completing their lap. Their determination, strengthened by the encouragement around them was impressive.
If this event is a litmus test for our culture, the result is unmistakable. We are a community that celebrates effort, fosters belonging and takes pride in lifting one another up.
On Wednesday 4 March 2026, Year 7 student vaccinations will be provided at School.
The vaccines will be:
- diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough), (dTpa) and
- human papillomavirus (HPV).
Vaccination can only be provided if consent has been received. To do this please visit the NSW Health website.
To complete the School Vaccination Consent Form for your children, you will need to:
- Enter your child’s personal details
- Provide the Medicare card details for you and your child
For detailed steps on how to provide consent, please refer to the NSW Health webpage.
Read the Parent Information Sheet and privacy statement. Translations are available in twenty-eight languages on the NSW Health webpage.
If you or your child does not have a Medicare card, internet access, or you are unable to complete the online consent, a paper consent form can be collected from Senior School Reception or Sick Bay.
As we move through the busy drop off and pick up periods each day, I remind all parents and carers to please follow all road rules and traffic instructions around the School. Your care and courtesy make a real difference to other drivers, to our neighbours and, most importantly, to the safety of every student.
A few extra moments of patience help keep these peak times calm, respectful and safe for everyone. Thank you for doing your part to support our community.
We are pleased to have our Year 7 students out at camp this week as the next step in their Senior School journey. The camp program is designed to help students build strong relationships, develop confidence and foster a deep sense of belonging both within their year group and their Houses. We are thrilled that our Year 10 Peer Support Leaders will be visiting on Thursday night. They are eager to take their first steps in this part of their leadership journey and to begin forming the connections that will support and guide Year 7 throughout the year.
Each year the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is undertaken by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. Students participate in tests for writing, reading, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.
In 2026 NAPLAN testing for Senior School students will take place at The Illawarra Grammar School between Wednesday 11 March and Wednesday 18 March.
NAPLAN is just one part of our school’s learning assessment program. The tests assess literacy and numeracy skills that students are already learning at school. In the Senior School, students will participate in NAPLAN Online tests on the following days:
Week 7

- Thursday 12 March: Reading
Week 8
- Monday 16 March: Conventions of Language
- Tuesday 17 March: Numeracy (Year 7)
- Wednesday 18 March: Numeracy (Year 9)
For students who are absent on any of these days, catch-up tests will be arranged.
In preparation for NAPLAN Online, all students in Years 7 and 9 will receive support at school to install the NAPLAN locked-down browser on their laptop. They will also participate in a NAPLAN practice test session.
On test days, students must ensure they have a fully-charged laptop, headphones and two pencils.
The NAPLAN Public demonstration site provides students with sample questions and an introduction to the tools and functions employed in the online NAPLAN tests.
Further information about NAPLAN is available on the NESA website.
Mrs Hughes, the Head of Academic Support, will communicate with the parents of students who qualify for disability provisions.
If you have any questions about NAPLAN in the Senior School, please contact the Director of Studies, Dr Michael Molkentin.
The Illawarra Grammar School’s Senior School Swimming Carnival, held earlier this week, was a wonderful celebration of House spirit, participation and athletic achievement. Despite a wet and rainy start to the morning, the enthusiasm of our students never wavered. By early afternoon, the skies had cleared, setting the scene for an exciting final round of races and strong finishes across all age groups.
What stood out most on the day was the exceptional level of participation across all Houses. Students embraced every opportunity to be involved—racing in events, filling relays, and cheering with genuine enthusiasm from the side of the pool. This wholehearted engagement, coupled with positive encouragement and friendly rivalry, created a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere from start to finish.
House Results
This year’s competition was incredibly close, with only 26 points separating first and second place. Final standings were:
- Kogara – 2,582 points
- Wolgal – 2,556 points
- Aranda – 1,674 points
- Coligan – 1,654 points
Congratulations to Kogara House for securing the overall win in what proved to be one of the tightest carnivals in recent years.
The carnival also saw four impressive records broken, highlighting the depth of talent within our School:
- London Campbell delivered an outstanding performance in the 15 Girls’ 100m Freestyle, breaking a long-standing record previously held by Olympian Emma McKeon, with a time of 1:02.79.
- London continued her exceptional form in the 15 Girls’ 50m Breaststroke, setting a new record of 36.83, exceeding the previous mark by more than two seconds.
- Max Eccles broke the 13 Boys’ 50m Backstroke record, finishing in an excellent time of 36.13.
- The Kogara Senior Girls’ 4 × 50m Freestyle Relay Team (Lucy Lidbetter, Xara-Jade McCrimmon, Mackenzie Tregonning, Tia McCrimmon) produced one of the standout highlights of the day, smashing the previous record by 15 seconds, with a new time of 2:03.80.
These achievements are testament to the dedication of our swimmers and the strength of our School’s sporting program.
A huge thank you goes to our staff and student leaders who ensured that the carnival ran smoothly. A special thank you also goes to the Wests Illawarra Aquatic Club for their outstanding support through the day.

Student Voice
Yasmin Matar – Head Prefect
Welcome to Term I and to what promises to be an exciting and eventful year ahead. I hope you’ve all settled back into school life and are feeling ready to take on 2026 with energy and purpose. Our theme for this year is Grit. The quiet determination to keep going, to show up on the hard days, and to support one another when things feel challenging. Grit is not just about pushing through but about growing through, together.
We’ve already seen this spirit in action at the Swimming Carnival this week. It was incredible to see such strong house pride, encouragement from the sidelines, and students giving it their all in and out of the pool.
This term also marks an important step in our continued partnership with Little Wings, our chosen Year 12 charity. The Head Prefect team recently had the opportunity to meet with CEO Clare Pearson, who spoke to us about her goal from this partnership to make ‘every student a Little Wings champion’. It was inspiring and motivating to hear firsthand about the impact this charity has on families across NSW and brainstorm our fundraising endeavours for this term. Thank you to everyone who has supported Little Wings so generously, whether through the Santa photos last term or the barbeque at the swimming carnival. Every contribution, big or small, truly makes a difference.
As we move forward into the year, I encourage you all to embrace grit. Try new things, back yourselves, and look out for those around you. I’m proud to be part of such a passionate and resilient school community, and I can’t wait to see what we can all achieve this year.

Psalm 19:1
This term, our Junior School memory verse is Psalm 19:1. Creation has a way of speaking, even without words. I felt this most vividly in January, watching the aurora over the south coast: blues and purples swirling in the most breathtaking shades. Echoing the Psalm 19, one theologian writes, “The beauty of the world is a reflection of the beauty of its Creator.” When moments like this come, it’s always worth pausing to listen to the voice of creation and to thank the One who made it all.
