Holidays
Much activity took place over the holidays including a trip to Japan for Years 9 and 10 Japanese elective students, a Year 10 service trip to Vietnam, Year 10 camps to the snow and Sydney, and a Year 11 service trip to Nganambala in the Northern Territory.
Many Year 12 students appreciated revision lessons from their teachers in the holidays, while two Year 11 students – Yasmin Matar and Charlee Ducat – took part in the NSW Youth Parliament.
Of course, at School, the usual contractors were involved in the maintenance of the School buildings and grounds; new staff rooms were formed in the Junior School; the IT Office was also moved to the Goodhew Library for easier access for students. Happily, considerable progress was also made on the new Hoskins Building, ready for a substantial concrete pour in the next two weeks.
This Term
At the whole-school Staff meeting held on Monday, there was considerable energy and anticipation for the term ahead. There is much good teaching and learning to be carried out this term, and the staff and I look forward to keeping you informed of the achievements and initiatives of our students.

Deputy Principal
During the term break I had the privilege of attending an event at NSW Parliament House involving two of our Year 11 students, Charlee Ducat and Yasmin Matar.
Along with around 90 other young people, Charlee and Yasmin were participating in the YMCA’s flagship youth leadership program: NSW Youth Parliament Sitting Week 2025.
Now in its 24th year, NSW Youth Parliament Sitting Week provides young people with an opportunity to take on the role of elected parliamentary representatives, re-enacting the full parliamentary process. Participants spend months working in committees to research, write, draft and debate bills which speak to significant issues for youth.
Across four days, bills were debated on the floor of Parliament, with sessions chaired by current NSW Members of Parliament. Topics spanned key areas like education, mental health, women’s and aboriginal affairs, disability inclusion, sustainability and youth justice.
Charlee and Yasmin participated in debates related to Disability Inclusion and Youth Justice. They both prepared and delivered speeches which reflected an impressive insight into these issues. Their speeches were delivered with confidence and passion. I was very impressed by their contributions.
Charlee said of the experience: “This program has taught us so many invaluable lessons not only in advocacy and commitment but leadership as well…”
I congratulate Charlee and Yasmin on their involvement and the way they represented our school with distinction.

What a day! Our first Junior School Walkathon was an overwhelming success. Thanks to the generous support of our P&F and the incredible enthusiasm of our families and staff, we are delighted to share that over $30,000 was raised towards the development of our new STEM Lab.
Our students embraced the day with great enthusiasm and energy, walking, dancing and enjoying the challenges throughout the course. It was a wonderful opportunity to come together as a school community in support of a shared purpose, and Dr Greenhalgh and I are grateful to all of our Junior School families who contributed to its success.
A very special thank you to Nazreen Barrett, Nicole Smith, Catherine Geenty, the Year 6 parent organising group and our Junior School administration staff for their thoughtful and careful coordination of the day.

Lotus lives with his guardian, a church employee, and is currently in a school year equivalent to Year 6. His favourite subject is Physical Education, and he enjoys running, soccer and singing.
Through our continued sponsorship, the staff at the Satanpakun (Place of Grace) Child Development Centre are able to provide Lotus with Bible teaching, medical care, regular health checkups, sports, tutoring, school tuition, music classes, educational resources and vocational training.
Thank you for your ongoing support and generosity as we continue to make a difference in Lotus’ life.

Senior School News
Head of Senior School
It was wonderful to welcome students back to the Senior School campus this week at the start of Term III. The middle of the year has been a particularly busy time in the 2025 school calendar which has seen Illawarra Grammar students travel to:
- The Royal National Park and Sydney (Year 10 City Camp),
- Vietnam (Year 10 Service Learning Tour),
- Kosciuszko National Park (Year 10 Snow Camp),
- Japan (Stage 5 Language students),
- Northern Territory (Year 11 Service Activity)
In addition, there was a range of Year 12 workshops taking place during the holiday, in preparation for the Trial examinations that will be commencing in Week 3.
This term will see works commence on the new Senior School kitchen which is scheduled for completion in early 2026. Students in Year 10 and Year 8 are already selecting, and looking forward to, the delivery of our new Hospitality and Food Technology courses that will be delivered for the first time in 2026.
Week 1 has been a busy week for Year 8 families with Parent Teacher Interviews preceding our Year 9 2026 Subject Selection Evening. A reminder to students and parents/carers that the deadline for students to submit their subject selections is Monday 28 July, 4.00pm. Instructions on how to do this have been sent to students via email.
Some new additions to the cocurricular line up in Term III are basketball, volleyball and rugby training. Years 9 and 10 will also be able to participate in Science week activities during Weeks 2 and 3 of this term.
The Mock Trial Competition, run by the Law Society of NSW, will be continuing into Semester 2 as The Illawarra Grammar School team was placed among the top 32 teams in the state during the first three rounds of competition. An elimination round will take place within the next three weeks before a final elimination round during August. Preparation for Mock Trials takes place on Wednesdays at lunch time.
Drama Club has a new time slot and location on Thursday mornings and interested students are encouraged to attend and try their hand at improv and theatre sports. An opportunity to compete in a theatre sports competition for Years 7 and 8 students may be offered later in the term.
As ever, parents, students and staff are able to find out more about our cocurricular program by visiting the Cocurricular Activities page on OLLE which provides a term calendar and links to information and contact details for individual activities. Students should also keep an eye on Daily Notices for cocurricular information.
Over the coming weeks, students in Years 10 and 11 will be carefully considering their applications for Student Leadership roles for the coming year. I would like to take this opportunity to recognise the hard work and leadership shown by the current Senior School Captains and Prefects who have made so many contributions to school life, so wonderfully personified Illawarra Grammar values, and inspired a generation of younger students.
Saturday Library will remain open throughout term time in Term III to senior students in Years 10, 11 and 12. With Prelims and Trials fast approaching, students in Years 11 and 12 in particular, may wish to take advantage of a quiet, familiar place to study, as well as access to high quality, free tuition in Stage 5 and 6 Mathematics and Science subjects.
The Library will be open between 9.00am until 2.00pm, with tuition available from 11.00am. Students can sign in and out using their school ID card.
The 2025 Illawarra Apprenticeship, Traineeship and Jobs Expo is coming up on Tuesday 12 August, from 2.00pm – 7.00pm at the Illawarra Hockey Centre in Unanderra.
This free event brings together over 30 exhibitors, including training providers, industry professionals and employers, offering a great chance to explore different career pathways and opportunities after school.
Students and parents are welcome to drop in – no registration needed.

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the School about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).
Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes:
- year of schooling
- category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional
- level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive.
This information assists schools to:
- formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools
- consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools
- develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational outcomes for students with disability.
The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.
The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The School will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information.
Personal details, such as student names or student identifiers, are not provided to federal education authorities. As a parent, there is nothing you need to do; this notice is to inform you that the data count will take place in August.
Further information about the NCCD can be found here.

Dear children, let us not love only with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
1 John 3:18
Since coming back from the break, I’ve loved hearing stories from our various school camps, whether it was building a home for a local family in Vietnam, grappling with the realities of urban poverty in Sydney, or helping a friend pitch a tent in the snow. Each trip offered moments – some big, some small – where students enacted love through service. This, I think, is our great hope for every student: that love-in-action becomes instinctive, just as it is for the God who first loved and served us. And when we do the same – quietly, generously, wholeheartedly – we reflect that love into the lives of others.
