Hoskins Update

I am pleased to be able to report that the demolition of the old H Block took place over the holidays. Now that the space is empty, it is easy to see the large footprint that the old building occupied. The new two-storey Hoskins Building will have a smaller footprint which means that we will be able to accommodate some new handball courts adjacent to the new Year 6 classrooms. Many of our Junior School students will be delighted by this news!

Strategic Plan

The School’s current Strategic Plan has been completed, and the senior staff and School Council have started to think about the next plan for our School. To this end, the Executive of the P and F met with me earlier this week to talk about the future direction of the School. I am very grateful to them for their considered ideas and suggestions.

All parents are encouraged to join in these consultations. I am keen to hear, first-hand, about the School’s features which parents value, and their thoughts about the best way forward for Illawarra Grammar.

Two more meetings are scheduled for next week – Monday 12 May and Wednesday 14 May, at 5.30 pm in the Library. In order to allow all participants to contribute, the groups size will be capped at fifteen people. More discussion times will be scheduled for the following weeks if needs be. If you would like to register for these consultation discussions, please do so by registering here.

Independent Schools in Australia

Some interesting statistical information about independent schools in Australia was recently released by Independent Schools Australia, and I thought I would share some of this data with you:

– There are 1,216 independent schools in Australia, 90% of which are co-educational

– Over 716,000 students attend independent schools in Australia

– Enrolments in independent schools in Australia grew by 3.9% in 2024

– Independent schools employ 19.6% of all teachers in Australian schools

– The locations of independent schools are 66.6% in major cities, 30.4% in regional areas, 3.5% in remote areas.

Happy Mother’s Day

Thank you to the P and F for organising the well-attended Mother’s Day lunch for Senior School mothers last week, and for the Mother’s Day Stall and Breakfast in the Junior School this week. All these events were joyous community occasions, and a lovely way to acknowledge the work of our School’s mothers.

I hope every TIGS mother has a wonderful day on Sunday. Please know that while we at Illawarra Grammar would like to think that we are having a major positive impact on the young lives in our care, we know that we fall well behind the impact of good mothers. Thank you for all you do to help us to teach well.

“Every step I take is because you first held my hand and showed me how to walk with courage.” From a grateful son.

Welcome to Term II

We’ve had a wonderful start to the term and it’s been a joy to see the students return with such enthusiasm. We are especially pleased to welcome Mrs Jessica Allard into her role as Director of Teaching and Learning, Junior School. Mrs Allard has already visited many classrooms, developing warm relationships with our students and staff, and offering valuable insight into our programs. We are thrilled to have her as part of our team.

Thank you for ensuring that students are wearing their full winter uniform, including appropriate hair, ribbons and shoes. Our uniform standards promote a strong sense of pride, respect and belonging among our students. Your ongoing support helps reinforce these expectations and ensures consistency across the School.

Student Voice

Welcome back to Term II. We hope all students, staff and families enjoyed a restful break. As we return, we look forward to the productive and engaging term ahead.

Since launching The Student Voice in Term IV last year, our goal has been to broaden its reach across our School, ensuring a rich diversity of perspectives. Last term, students from across the Senior School expressed keen interest in being part of this initiative by participating in an application process.

The calibre of applications was outstanding, reflecting the thoughtfulness, passion and dedication of these students.

It is with great pleasure that we introduce the students who will be representing their respective year groups in 2025:

  • Year 7: Joanna Miller and Jaxson Turner
  • Year 8: Isabella Xu and Caitlin Mitchell
  • Year 9: Amelia Murray and Jade Raffelini
  • Year 10: Sienna Bohm and Pearl Bramble
  • Year 11: Jemima Hemmes and Lucy Bernie

We look forward to the energy, ideas and creativity these students will bring to the role and to the way they will help shape the future of this segment in the years ahead.

Congratulations once again to the 2025 Student Voice Team.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

John 3:16

For every war that Australia has fought, a great sacrifice has been paid on two fronts: by those who have served and by those who have sent loved ones to serve. God knows what it’s like to be the sacrifice and to sacrifice his beloved. God the Father so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son to conquer death. But to do so, the Son had to lay down his life for the sins of the world.

At the cross, we see a grieving Father and a suffering Saviour. Because God knows what it’s like to lose his Beloved, he can comfort us in our grief and suffering.

On Anzac Day, we honour and commemorate the servicemen and servicewomen who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our nation. But we also honour and thank those who sent their loved ones to serve.

Lest we forget.
