TIGS sporting success

Interschools Snowsports
The ACT and Regional NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships were held in Perisher from 18-21 July. With 23 students from Year 1 through to Year 12 competing across the week. TIGS made a string showing, competing against many formidable snowsports schools from the region. There were many outstanding individual and team performances including:
- The Division 2 Male Snowboard team (Matthew Murray, James Murray and Savy Sevastos) winning both the Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross events.
- The Division 2 Male Ski Team (Tom Armstrong, James Murray & Matthew Murray) winning the Alpine event and placing third in the SkiCross event.
- Michael Murray winning both the Snowboard GS and Snowboard Cross events in Division 1.
- Marcelle Davis-Cook winning the Snowboard Cross and placing second in the Snowboard GS
Of the 23 TIGS skiers and boarders that competed, an amazing 17 have qualified to compete at the State Championships, which will be held from 21-25 August. We wish them all the best!
State Schools Surfing Titles
Samuel Lowe and Joe Sommerville competed at the NSW State School’s Surfing Titles, held at Sandon Point on Wednesday 19 July. With Joe competing up an age group, to enable the boys to make 16 and Over team, the boys surfed exceptionally well through the day, making it through to the finals. They were both happy to have finished in 4th position overall against some amazing surfers.
CIS, NSWPSSA and NSW All Schools Cross Country
TIGS has had strong representation at the recent CIS and NSW Schools Cross Country Championships. Some highlights included Jack Gibson winning both his CIS and NSW All Schools races; Oscar Sheppard and Mikayla McLean finishing in third place at their CIS event and the 16Yrs Girls team of Ella Fennell, Zoe McClatchie, Marcelle Davis-Cook and Caitlin Loudon placing third in the teams event at CIS. Well done to everyone and a special congratulations to Oscar, Jack, Mikayla, Michael Mitchell and James Brewer for qualifying to compete at the state championships.

South Coast Junior Rugby Gala Day
Rugby is back in the Junior School!
We are delighted to have been asked to attend a Rugby 7’s Gala Day run by Rugby NSW. The tournament involved schools from the Illawarra and involved Touch Rugby 7’s and Tackle Rugby 7’s teams. TIGS was able to field 4 teams.
We sent our first ever primary school girls Rugby 7’s tackle team to the event and what a wonderful occasion it was. For most of the girls it was their first tackle experience except for the training we had been doing at school. The girls battled it out against the boys tackling hard, rucking, mauling, and driving the ball forward with great determination. The girls were competitive, scoring at various points in the games against the boys and then in their last match, they played a mixed team. They played hard and took away a win!
The boys tackle team was competitive with a loss, 2 draws and a win. The boys had a few members of the group that were playing their first ever tackle games, and all involved loved the physicality of the experience, and have a desire to play more. Their technique and understanding of the game was on display, and many parents and teachers were impressed by the standard of play.
The two other TIGS teams were the boys and girls Touch Rugby 7’s teams. This was a new game for many, and this game involved elements of touch football and modifications such as two hand touch, 7 touches, kicks and backwards drop ball allowed. They were fast games and TIGS were competitive, taking away numerous wins during the day.
Students, parents, and teachers were all buzzing after a wonderful Rugby 7’s experience, and we are all looking forward to the next big rugby day!
Illawarra and Regional Netball Schools Cup
Our Junior School Netball teams have had great success over the last few weeks. They first competed at the Illawarra Schools Netball Cup in late Term II. The 3/4 team won four games and lost one. The 5/6 Gold (B) team won all of their games. The 5/6 Blue (A) team won all of their games and their semi final. They also beat the winner of the other semi in their regular pool. This meant that the 5/6 A team went on to the next level to play in the Regional Finals at the Shoalhaven Netball Centre.
The girls played seamlessly as a team, easily defeating all teams played in their pool rounds and semi-finals, showing excellent sportsmanship. Shellharbour Public School were simply too strong for the team in the Grand Final, we wish them well in the Sydney Schools Cup final. A huge thank you to each of our team members for their dedication, hard work and teamwork. Thank you to our supportive parents who came and encouraged, scored and supplied treats, to Mrs Carswell for coaching and to Ted for driving the bus and umpiring.

AICES Netball Cup
The 15’s Girls Netball team had a great day of netball, especially considering they went along for development, in preparation for next year. TIGS fielded a younger team of mostly 13 and 14 year old players in Year 8 and Year 9, who were competing against Year 9 – Year 10 teams across the six games. We played the eventual winner Newcastle Grammar in our first game, losing 23-8.
Our second game was close, we lost 15-12 against Moriah College, in our third game we were defeated 20-11 by Arndell Anglican College and we won our final pool game against Orange Anglican Grammar. We finished 4th in our pool and played Hunter Valley Grammar School in the Semi Finals losing 21-19. This meant we played Moriah College again and lost 18-13. Across the day we played 150 minutes of netball, not only displaying excellent teamwork and resilience, but importantly, we had a wonderful day together and look forward to coming back next year.
NSWPSSA Netball Championships
Last week Manha Khan – Year 6 represented CIS at the NSWPSSA Netball Championships, held in Port Macquarie. Manha’s team performed exceptionally well, with CIS placing 4th out of the 14 teams. It was a wonderful experience for Manha, who grew in her netball skill and knowledge throughout the week.
NASSA Volleyball Gala Day(Year 10 – Year 12)
The girls commenced the day against Georges River Grammar and, after a respectable start in the first set, TIGS unfortunately, lost 3-0. The second game was against St Luke’s Grammar who also proved too strong on the day. TIGS girls team fought hard in the consolidation final against Penrith Anglican and despite it being a much closer game, lost in three sets.
The boy’s team developed considerably throughout the day, demonstrating some highly proficient skills by the end of the last game. Gala days are often about development and fun, with the opportunity to practice how to win and lose respectfully. The boy’s team definitely learnt these valuable lessons, including the importance of teamwork to be successful.
