Highlights For The Start of Term III

It is great to see some of the highlights of the school year and selected co-curricular events starting to take place again this term. Sadly we’re not yet able to return to the vibrancy and busyness of our full pre-COVID programme however it is great to see teachers and students overcoming the challenges before us with creativity and energy. Look out over the coming weeks for updates on modified events such as our showcase of Year 12 HSC and DP major projects at ‘The Works’ exhibition, and reports from a very different Year 12 Captain’s Charity Fundraiser event.
Mock Trial Round 1:
Shellharbour Anglican School vS The Illawarra Grammar School
Last week, TIGS students put forward a convincing defence in the criminal matter of Crown v. Cleever. The Mock Trial was held over Zoom this year which came with some challenges but the excellent facilities available at TIGS and the support of our fantastic ICT team made it possible for our Mock Trial team to present themselves in the best light.
The six students competing were well prepared and had gone to great effort to ensure TIGS had the best chance possible to win this challenging case: Nicholas S was formidable when presenting objections to the prosecution’s examination of their first witness. Daniel M as second Barrister was fierce when cross-examining the prosecution’s second witness. Sally G was an excellent first witness and gave a convincing testimony. Sally L was very entertaining and handled cross-examination well. Annabel H kept the defence team on track and supported both Barristers through her deep understanding of the law and how it applies to the case. Nicholas C was an accurate and succinct Court Officer.
The supporting members of the team followed the case closely and learned a great deal from our first Mock Trial competition this year. The Judge awarded the case for the defence. The moot was found in favour of the prosecution. We are already looking ahead to the next round, scheduled to take place later this term!
Recommencement of Onsite Music Tuition
At TIGS, we are incredibly lucky to have an amazing team of peripatetic music tutors, and we are so grateful for the expertise of each individual tutor, and the dedication and commitment they bring to their teaching. We know that students were extremely disappointed that their lessons were affected due to COVID-19. Thank you to those tutors that continued lessons via Zoom during this difficult time.
We are pleased to announce that all tutors will be welcome back onsite to teach their students face-to-face from the start of Term III. For those students who were having lessons prior to COVID-19, your tutor will contact you very soon to confirm your lesson day and time.
If there are other students who are interested in learning an instrument, the benefits of music in terms of the cognitive, emotional, and social development of students is well researched. At TIGS we have an array of specialist tutors who come to our campus each week to teach individual lessons to our students. We offer lessons in Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Voice and Drums.

Independent Schools Football Cup
After an extended break due to the pandemic, TIGS Open Girls Football team was excited to be back playing in the Independent Schools Football Cup. On Wednesday 22 July, they travelled up to Turramurra to play against Loreto Normanhurst. The last time these two teams met was in 2017, when Loreto had a narrow 4-3 win, so TIGS arrived with a point to prove. The game was a see-sawing affair, with both teams leading at different stages of the game. TIGS dominated possession throughout the game and created plenty of excellent opportunities, going into the first-half break with a 3-2 lead. Loreto came out firing in the second half and levelled the score, only to have TIGS hit back immediately with two goals to take a 5-3 lead. A late goal from Loreto had everyone on the edge of their seats, but TIGS was able to tough it out for an outstanding, hard-fought 5-4 win. It was a fantastic all-round team effort, with each of the girls having some excellent contributions. A big thank you to Zoe D from Year 12, who took time out of her busy study schedule and dominated the midfield, scoring two cracker goals and setting up two others. The other goal scorers were Molly B (2) and Alissa T.
The girls also had the privilege of having ‘Matilda’, Alanna Kennedy, who was training nearby, come and talk with them to provide some inspirational words and join in on the team photo.

The team will have another break now and will wait on the outcome of COVID-19 health advice to determine if we are able to continue in the competition.
