Karobran & Orana

The Illawarra Grammar School Parents and Friends Association

The vision of the P&F is: "Parents and friends in active partnership with the school in the education and development of our children, supporting the school's mission and values".

Our aim is to welcome parents and guardians of TIGS students in an informal and friendly environment and foster the feeling of belonging to the TIGS community. The P&F encourages engagement without onerous commitment, providing opportunities for interaction through initiation and participation in various activities, both social and informative. It provides avenues of communication between families and with the school to the mutual benefit of the entire TIGS community.

In 2007 the P&F commenced a restructure to formalise it as a `whole school' group made up of parents and guardians of children in both the Junior and Senior schools. 2008 saw the beginning of a new era for the TIGS Parents & Friends Association with the formal acceptance of the amalgamation of the Junior School and Senior School parent groups at the February 27 AGM.

Two Standing Committees: Karobran (an aboriginal word meaning `Together') in the Junior School, and Orana (an aboriginal word meaning `Welcome') in the Senior School, together, form the TIGS P&F Association.

The P&F Committee consists of the Executive officers of Orana and Karobran plus the TIGS representative to the NSW Parents Council and up to three non-executive committee members.

The 2008 TIGS P&F Committee is:

President: Rod Nairn Orana President
Vice President: Annabel Scott Karobran Chair
Treasurer: Grant Neilsen Orana Treasurer
Assistant Treasurer Paul Kunkler Karobran Treasurer
Secretary: Miriam Rooney Orana Secretary/Communications
Assistant Secretary Tracey Jansen Karobran Secretary/Communications
TIGS NSW Parent Council
Representative: Sandy Halley Orana
Committee Member Jo Morrell Karobran / Orana
Committee Member Sue Nairn Orana
Committee Member Naomi Spencer Orana

An important part of the P&F is the Year/Class Representative programme in both Orana and Karobran, which encourages communication and helps to support individual and specific needs of different year groups.

Highlights of the P&F Year include:
  • `New Parents Evening' held each February to welcome new families
  • Karobran Parents Welcome Lunch
  • `TIGS Great Fete' held in May
  • Karobran Cocktail Evening
  • Karobran Special Persons Day
  • Annual Dinner/Dance which debuted in September 2007
  • other Year initiated activities...

Under the new organisation Karobran and Orana will hold general meetings once per term.

All parents and guardians of students at TIGS are members of the TIGS P&F. If you have children in the junior school your primary focus will be Karobran. For those with children in senior school you focus will be Orana. Many of you will be associated with both.

This is your P&F so come along and be part of it - enjoy the fun!
